JLR recommend an OEM version of their engine oils...I assume that the 10w50 Selenia is pure marketing and will be no different to that offered by the likes of Castrol?

In a word - additives. Or to put it another way, no, not the same. Whether that means it matters or is better or worse is another question. If you can find another oil that conforms to the exact spec required by your car then it ‘should’ be ok; but why risk your engine to save a few quid.

That's a very fair point.
Compared to the stuff I have to stick in my daily runner, the pukka Petronis isn't mega expensive.

Just put in anything from a decent brand that conforms to the spec. You won’t be “risking” your engine if you use something from Shell, Castrol etc etc despite what people will say.

Yep, too many people get hung up about what oil. As said, use oil that is the spec for your engine. More emphasis should be changing the oil & filter regularly, an engine will benefit from this far more.
