Hi,

I'm trying to find out which alternator is fitted to a Croma 1.9 8v that belongs to my friend. He lives a distance away so I can't look at it in person, and he's not savvy enough to be able to find out himself.

I've been given the part number 51793678 which has a D shaped attachment on the rear that looks like this:

However the majority of the alternators that are listed for this engine by suppliers have a different fitting on the rear that looks like this:

Some of the listings specifically say that they are for engine model 939A1000 which is what I think I have. Some listings show that they are suitable for pretty much all of the engines fitted to the Croma, whereas others say that they aren't. I haven't been able to find out any more info than this.

Does anyone know which one is fitted for sure, what the difference is, or if either of them can be used? Any info would be much appreciated.

There is a lot more choice available for the second type, with slightly lower prices, but I don't want to end up getting the wrong one.

Thank you!

The proper way to do this is via the vehicle chassis number.

There are various alternators fitted to the Croma depending on model and electrical requirements. e.g. 120A, 115-120A, 70-120 and 70-140A.

The P/N 51734824 you qutoed was replaced with P/N 51854902, 115-120A listed for:
GD - DRIVING SEAT SIDE:RIGHT HAND DRIVE
A810 - LIGHT TROPIC
E007 - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

As for terminal configurations at the rear the parts slides do not go to that level of detail.

As S130 says there are a number of alternators for the 8V.

If you send me a private message with the VIN number of the car I can get the correct number for you.

Robert G8RPI.

Thank you g8rpi, I've sent you a PM with the VIN

Hi,
According to ePer the correct alternator part number is 51764265 70-100A
This is listed as original fit for that VIN.

I did a bit more digging andd apparently the 51764265 was replaced by the 51854901. The two look interchangable.

HTH,
Robert G8RPI.

P/N: 51854901 replaced 51764264 on 08.05.2009.

It appears that P/N: 52003506 replaced 51854901 on 15.10.2017 as listed on KeyPER dated 30.09.2017.

As always if you want to purchase the latest Fiat part (bearing in mind Fiat seem to replace/supersede parts on a regular basis) then go to your expensive dealer and let them look the latest part number up for you. Alternatively buy an after market replacement/reconditioned unit.

Definitely get the replacement part if you can the original 8v alternators were well known for failing, esp due to heat stress.

My first one lasted about 20k miles before it went and am now on my fourth at 110k miles.

The later ones seem to be much more robust.
