Hi, I have purchased a new plastic gaiter restraint. The old one had snapped. I could not see what the elastic fabric attachment was for except that the old one was still firmly still connected to the gearstick. The new plastic restraint had a similar elasticated piece of material attached to it. I had no means of attaching the new one and it wasn't mentioned in a youtube video that I watched. I have now secured the gaiter with the new restraint but both the old and new elasticated fabric bits are not being used and still inside the gaiter. All seems to work OK for now. Does anyone foresee any problems and can anyone explain what the use of this elastic is?

I think that the little white loop of elasticated material is designed to pull the gearstick over into the neutral posistion between 3rd & 4th. I guess without it a worn gear linkage may rattle in the neutral posistion where ever it wanted to!
