Hello
I have a 2006 Fiant punto with 100350 miles on it. I have been going through hell and high water trying to figure out this problem. I have the P0011 code "advanced timing" and I have replaced the camshaft sensor, oil sensor for the VVT, crankshaft sensor and timing belt. The oil is 5W 40 any ideas what else could cause this? The only thing i can think of now is the camshaft phaser or the computer? Any idea how to test those? Any help would be appreciated!

Difficulty of Diagnosis and Repair – (1-4)
Visually inspect the connector, wiring, or valve problems with the Oil Control Valve for bank 1 exhaust valve.
Check the engine’s oil level and viscosity to see if they are correct.
Check the live freeze frame data
Monitor the timing of the data and disconnect the Oil Control Valve to the exhaust camshaft. If there is a change it means that the valve is working correctly and there is an electrical problem within the ECM.
Find your vehicle specific service manual and follow the pinpoint tests to repair them as needed.

Code P0011 Definition
Camshaft Position “A” – Timing Over -Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

What Does P0011 Mean?
Variable Valve/Camshaft Timing in the internal combustion engine control the intake and exhaust gases in and out of the gas combustion chamber. You want to vary the way your engine operates at different points of the engine’s rev range. Varying the different valve events: valve timing, valve duration, and valve lift allows the ECU to constantly make a call to the most power, the best mpg, and the lowest emissions. The different pistons that pump up and down leave the exhaust valves with the maximum air space that the engine can take in fuel and air to give you maximum power. When trouble code P0011 is set, it means that camshaft position “A” in Bank 1 is more advanced than the ECM has told it to be.

P0011 Symptoms
Check Engine Light
Hard start of the engine
Rough running engine
Increased fuel economy
Failed emissions test

P0011 Causes
The exhaust shaft has advanced too much when the ECM has told it to slow down to a lower timing level.
Camshaft variable timing solenoid failure
Camshaft phaser is seized in the advanced position
Continuous oil flow to Variable Camshaft Timing chamber
Viscosity of oil is too thick or too thin

ode P0011 Severity – Moderate
The engine may have erratic and other engine problems that could affect driving and fuel economy may decrease due to increase fuel consumption. As for any Diagnostic Trouble Code it should be repaired as soon as possible for no internal damage.

Code P0011 Common Diagnosis Mistakes
Replacing sensors or components without any indication of a problem with the sensors or components.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0011 code?
Follow these simple guidelines to prevent mistakes:

Always do a visual inspection for common problems like checking to see if all electrical connectors are connected.

Check engine oil to see if it is full, clean, and of the correct viscosity.

Check, document and clear failure codes. Test to verify the code coming back before any further tests are done.

The manufacturer pinpoint test procedures should be followed step-by-step without skipping any steps to prevent a misdiagnosis and replacing of good components.

Do not replace any sensors or components unless tests indicate a problem.

How serious is the P0011 code?
The engine may run erratic and stall, hesitate, run rough, or have a hard starting condition.

The engine may have excessive fuel consumption, carbon fouling of engine components, and various drive complaints depending on the camshaft failed position.

Driving the vehicle for prolonged time with the camshafts not advancing or retarding may cause other problems to the valve train or engine depending on the cause of the failure.

What repairs can fix the P0011 code?
Resetting the fault codes and performing a road test
Changing the oil and filter to the proper oil viscosity for the engine specifications
Repairing or replacing the wiring to the camshaft oil control valve for bank 1 intake camshaft
Replacing the camshaft oil control valve for bank 1 intake camshaft
Checking the timing chain alignment for jumped timing problems
Additional comments for consideration regarding the P0011 code
The engine oil passages through the camshafts and oil control valves are a specific size and only the manufacturer's recommended oil viscosity should be used. If too thick or thin oil is used, the camshaft timing phasers may not change the camshaft timing advance as the manufacturer’s designed them to and may cause premature failure of camshaft and related engine components from lack of proper lubrication.

I'd first check the correct fitting (initial timing) of the belt/chain using the appropriate locking tools and method. If timing is proved ok I'd investigate further ...

You can also check timing through MES - there are parameters for timing measuring camshaft position. One is "desired timing angle" and other is "measured angle" (online). On idle, both values must be zero. Once you press gas pedal, both values must go up and match together. If there is difference between expected and real, then VVT system isnt working ok. If timing isnt correct, youll also listen it - engine will not crank so easy as usual, louder engine overal...
