So my parrner's 500 has started making a loud noise sometimes even a rumbling cracking noise at speeds around 40-60 mph in 5th gear the car also seems to build up high revs at this speed between 3-4000 while accelerating normally. Any idea what this might be. Car is 9 years old is this it just showing it's age or is there likely a problem?

If the engine really is doing 3000-4000 rpm between 40 & 60mph in 5th then your clutch is slipping badly and will need to be replaced.

If the engine speed increases suddenly or faster than the car accelerates then as JR states the clutch is failing if that is the case have it sorted asap or you may end up stranded, ring Fiat as well as other places they may have a(ask if there is ) fixed price for a new clutch?
