I've just purchased a 1.9 grande punto, 1.9 jtdm

Anyway it has trouble starting up from both cold & hot (So assume its not glow plugs)
No fault codes in ECU.
Runs absolutely fine once started, no misfire etc.

It just takes about 45 seconds to fire up.

It has full Fiat service History and cam belt has been changed, only about 80k miles.

what's your thoughts?

Crankshaft sensor? (Although would this cause problems whilst running?)
Test injectors - (leak off test?)

No sure where to start

Hi, and welcome,

ok - so no codes,

does it smoke on start-up ?
if no smoke then it's burning cleanly..NOT the plugs.

have you cycled the plugs? (to build heat).. good diagnostic tool ;)

after that you'd want to look at what the ECU's seeing..,

Hi

Thanks for quick reply.

No smoke. Drives absolutely lovely.

Would the glow plugs be a possible cause if it still has trouble starting after running for 30 mins +?

How do I do the ecu test?

Hi

How do I do the ecu test?

the basic theory is that COMPRESSION is enough to get diesel burning = the engine running,
glow plugs just add local HEAT..to aid the initial burning

once the engine is WARM thay should do very little,

Diagnostics;
plug in a device to the OBD port - like when you scanned for codes,
then look up all of the temperature sensor readings,
if it thinks it's -40'C it'll do odd things..for example

we tend to use MultiECUScan,:)

I'll give a link to similar Multijet posts,

Thanks Charlie

I'll try that

Also on that tread its suggested to test the battery startup crank voltage. I'll give that ago as well

That's why I'm stumped. No codes and I'm using an expensive CReader professional machine.

I'm hoping it's the battery.

I'll test the battery in the week as I need to get a new injector T-Piece as broke one

The car on my drive but when I was checking the injectors one of the T-Pieces must have been brittle and snapped. Now when I start the car it pisses diesel everywhere.
Just waiting for a new injector T-Piece to arrive and then I can test the battery then move into other things.

I'm in East Sussex- St leonards

Cold crank on battery is around 10.5 so think the battery is ok

I noticed today the starter motor was turning slowly on a few attempts so wondering if this is the cause.

Have ordered a new one.

Any instructions/ guides how to fit? And is it easy for a noob? Or shall I get a mechanic? (Approx what labour time is it)

1.9 d, 120 bhp

Starter motor changed but made no difference.

Have the injectors tested Monday (leak back test)

Temp sensors seem ok

Fuel rail pressure 1090 kpa with ignition in and car not running
And around 38,000 kpa when running in tick over.

Does this sound normal?
