Following the success of my washer pump replacement this afternoon I'm ready to tackle a bigger job :D

My starter motor doesn't bite every time so I'd like to refurb it myself.
What are the steps to remove and refit the motor and which tools are required.

BTW - I don't have a ramp so I'll have to do this through the engine bay.

Thanks

Is it a 500 or 650 engine? Pull starter or solenoid?
If it's a 500 having a ramp won't make any difference as the starter is located at the top of the bell housing. If you do need more room underneath the car I used to jack the rear wheels up and put bits of wood underneath the rear tyres.
Disconnect battery. 3 bolts holding it on 13mm socket or spanner. Then it all depends on what type it is.

You will have to remove the fork for the pull starter which is held on with a pin fixed with a split pin. Disconnect the power lead held on with 13mm nut. It's a long time since I've done this so trying to do it from memory. Do you have access to a manual?

Thanks Paolo66 - I have a manual but the instructions are very basic.

Before I attempt a removal, I need to find a replacement pinion/bendix as I think that's the part preventing a consistent bite when starting.

I'm struggling to locate the part for the 500L. Anyone know where I can get one?
