Had a thumping clonking noise when turning the steering wheel.

When turning the shock top bolts by a socket to spin the piston I noticed the top of the N/S spring was catching at the top then bouncing round, causing the noise.

Good to find the top bearing not a FIAT only part... most other MJ parts I need seem to be :(

Will post some pics in a min.

Here we go

New part

I hate this bit

Locked old and new 19mm nuts to help keep the piston still to remove the 27mm nut

Nice gap - no spring tension

and it's off

Well messy - bearing won't move.

Nice and new - smooth as can be

On it goes

Starting to feel safe when this nut goes on, but don't like playing with spring clamps

All off - just need to pop back on the car.

Copper spray was an attempt to get the bearing / spring slipping while I waited for the new part.

It Made little difference :D

All finished by bed time and no clonking noise today - smooth stearing again :)

Did my front shocks 2.5 year ago after a pot hole run in

Looking back I should have done the bearings too

I didn't look up the parts - I just ask my local motor factors and they rarley get it wrong.

Took about 3 hours last night... think that's why I often don't bother with pictures as it seems to add in a lot of time... maybe not helped by not keeping a tidy tool box and working by lamp :)

Seem to have a very slight knocking over bumps on the N/F/F

Maybe like the drop link is on its way out after being removed and put back.

Also the power steering has tripped off a couple of times since I did the bearing.

Also on the new bearing side I noticed less strut top sticking through and a smaller gap under between top plates to inner wing. think the new one is slightly thicker.

Guess I'll have to do the driver’s side too to even them up.

Just seen your thread SB1500. What a mission getting them bits! My motor factor is a FIAT enthusiast and tries really hard to get bits for me. Even checks a copy of the EPER to get the FIAT part number and crossref aftermarket alternatives if stuck.

Known him since we both had Unos – Just about the last ones on the road in this town – top guy.
