Hi there,
I have set my mileage counter to tell me what MPG I'm getting at that exact moment, and I drive the same route every day, with the same fuel. However, I've noticed that my MPG is at least half what it was before an accident on Friday (details below).
I took my 2005 Fiat Doblo 1.9JTD to a garage for a new front drivers drive shaft and MOT on Friday 11th September. The new drive shaft replacement was due to the CV boot being broken and a knocking noise when steering (old car, why not replace whole thing). This meant that this garage was the last to take the front drivers wheel off.
The same day that this work was done, I had booked to stay at a campsite near Crediton, 40 miles away, for 2 nights. After driving around 15 miles, there was a louder knocking, similar to the sound before, so I stopped and rang the garage. The owner came to look at the car and said that it's definitely not the bolts, it's a faulty CV Joint on the new drive shaft. Worst case scenario, the steering locks up and we'd have to stop.
I was told that we'd be ok for the weekend as we were only doing 40 miles there and back, just don't go over 40mph to be safe.
When we were 2 miles away from the campsite, there was a loud bang and the front drivers wheel came off. Luckily I was driving at 20-25mph as I was preparing for a blind bend on a country lane.
This resulted in the brake disc grinding on the floor (2-3mm disappeared), a crushed wing preventing drivers door from opening and the loss of bolts.
I took the car back to the same garage, who provided a courtesy car until they had fixed the car, free of charge. However, upon collection of my car and a second opinion, the garage have now agreed to replace all parts at their expense.
My question is, although the wheel is back on and the brakes work fine, is there any way that my MPG has dropped as a result of damage from this accident? If so, any idea what it could be?
Thanks, Owen
