Just had some prices on parts from my local fiat dealer and he says the recommends changing the following parts:-

£38 belt

£27 bearing

£75 adjuster bearing (necessary?)

£160 variator (necessary?)

Are the last two items THAT important when doing a cambelt change?

Cheers

Paul

Sorry, its a...

1998 Bravo 20v HGT (147bhp)

Re: Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

Didn't they mention the camblet tensioners?

If not, I'd change dealerships if I were you.

You'd be wise to go for the parts mentioned, assuming you intend to keep the car a long while yet. Also, iy may be a good idea to get the clutch done whilst the motor is out.

Seems a bit steep to me.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

The adjustable bearing is the tensioner.

Just seems alot of parts needed, i was only expecting a belt and a bearing but im not too sure about the variator now.

Who's your local Fiat dealer - I take it its in Cornwall? I live in London, but am originally from Cornwall, and was hoping to get it done cheaper in Cornwall. Re - London area - I've had various quotes of £450/£480/£575 so far...

Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

Im gettin a local guy to do it, it was just the parts needed i was querying, esp the "variator"

Re: Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

There are two tensioners - maybe the call the other on the variator!

Seeing as there's labour on top of that - I'd give them a swerve.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

The variator changes the cam timing. There were issues on the Barch with the variator but none on the HGT. Don't bother changing it.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

Apparantly the variator had something to do with retarding the ignition????

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

Slightly off topic, but as you know, I had to go to FIAT to get a steel wheel, while I was waiting to be served, a woamn came in to have a four year service done on her car, and she asked if the belts needed changing, and the guy said ..............nope, not for 6 years or 72.000 miles!!!!!

Cant believe thet are still saying that

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Cambelt Service Question???

Yeh I've just bought my Bravo HGT with 54,000 miles on the clock and am looking into getting quotes for cambelt change at the mo, as read in the Fiat manuel that it needs changing at 63,000 miles/5 years...
