hi I have now power steering and I bought a replacement steering rack/motor thing but it has a sticker on it says it was from a 5 door stilo. mines a 3 door does this matter and does it matter that the fiat numbers don't match, just according to a friend it does but he don't know much.
please help

3 and 5 door power steering racks are the same but the motors are different. There are 2 different racks, one for the 1.8 and 2.4 engines and one for the other engine versions.

No I havent checked the battery yet will do that tomorrow what kind of volts should I be getting. Whats good and whats bad? Apparently you have to replace the ecu under the bonnet aswell to match the ecu on the steering rack is this correct?

With nothing switched on, there should be 12.75 volts at the battery terminals. Then with the engine running at about 2000rpm, the battery voltage should have increased to between 13.7 and 14.3 volts.

There is no ECU on the steering rack, it's a purely mechanical component. There is an ECU on the power steering motor. No other ECUs have to be replaced when fitting a new steering motor.

Right coz some people are saying that the long number starting 000 needs to match on the steering and the ecu under the bonnet. So if the battery is ok do I need to just replace the motor or the whole rack?

Right been to kwik fit and the battery is kickin out 12.88 when the cars not running but hes says the battery is at 43% which according to him is knacked. What you guys think???

Took it somewhere else and he said battery was fine so dunno what to do now. Sick

Can you just replace the motor or do you have to do the full unit? Then get it re coded apparently?

You need to know if the alternator is charging the battery. When the alternator stops charging, the power steering motor stops working.

Can you just replace the motor or do you have to do the full unit? Then get it re coded apparently?

The motor is supplied as a complete unit as shown in the picture below.

Took it to another garage and according to them battery and alternator working fine.

Check fuses F2 (70 Amp) and F24 (10 Amp) in the engine compartment fuse box.

Blade type fuses can develop a hairline crack, so you need to test them with a multimeter, or a battery and bulb, or by substitution.

hi, guys, I had a power steering failure the battery is new and very good condition I replaced the whole steering column now its working fine but the warning light is still on dashboard screen says power steering failure and airbag failure please help
the car didn't pass the inspection and i cant use it

Reading this thread it seems there is an ECU on the steering motor, so if your steering ECU is now no longer the original one, then a proxy alignment will be required (so the two ECU's can communicate signals to each other). The airbag has an ECU too, and I suppose that also doesn't recognise the steering ECU now, so the same thing applies.

For a proxy alignment you need to have the software and leads to connect to the car's diagnostics port. A fiat dealer will have one for sure but some other specialists might have a similar system that can do a proxy alignment on a Stilo. You might need to ask.

If you have a laptop and like poking around with electronics then you can buy the software and the correct lead so that you have it for any other time you need to check the ECU codes or align something.
