Hi

Recently my wiper stalk has snapped off from the steering coloumn. All the wires are still connected and it still works but isn't able to be reattached as there isn't enough strength for it to work.

I have bought a new stalk section (indicator and wiper unit) and have taken it to a garage to be fitted but they said it would need to go to fiat as it requires specialist tools.

Does anyone know if this is true or has anyone fitted this part before and know what to do?

I have a 1.2 active

Thanks

I had to replace my stalks earlier in the year, its true about the special tools to remove the wheel.
Took mine to a former dealer, Norris Brothers in Tamworth, and to remove and refit the wheel and also change the stalk assy they charges an hours labour, around £55 if I remeber correctly, very fair I thought.(y)

Would be cheaper to buy any tools then pay Fiat, and do you know what 'specialist tools' is required? As many people have retrofitted cruise control which includes adding the extra stalks.

There's no specialist tools- it's just the technique for releasing the airbag... which can be an arse if you haven't done one before.

It cant be that hard or difficult, if I recall correctly vimto-rolf or whatever his name was managed to change the steering wheel all on his own without a safety net and he was far from being the sharpest knife in the drawer :D

I have had a broken wiper stalk for months. It was easy to fix with 'Q-bond' (amazing filing powders & glue) but suddenly the mechnism at the joint has seized so I have no control of front or rear screen wash and I've had enough of poor visibility.....:bang:

I went to my local Halfords autocentre and they said because of the explosive behind the airbag it has to be done by a Fiat dealership who have specialist traing and tools to replace the whole unit behind the steering wheel.

Hartwells in chester said they couldn't give me a price until they have taken the part off?!? At this point, I thought - what a load of rubbish and feel like I'm being taken for a ride.

Anyone know how much this unit costs?

"All for one tiny piece of badly designed plastic" (n)

The saga continues....

After taking the T-Jet in...

Day 1- Hartwells told me that they wouldn't know what part it would be until they removed the streering wheel...

Day 2 - They removed the part and said they're trying to track one down but didn't have it, it was ordered...

Day 3 - The part came but it was the wrong one!?! :bang: they then ordered another part...

Day 4 - The new part was the right one but when put on, nothing worked, they ordered a part from Italy...

Day 8 - The part finally arrived, I went to pick it up, and the steering wheel didn't turn to the right properly :bang:

I sat in their show room for nearly 2 hours before they refitted the part.

Total price £239.36.

Nightmare:cry:
