hi im new to the punto world ( im previosly a cing and sei man lol )
but cant seem to find anything on this
i have a 2003 punto mk2 1.2 8v and am wondering if the mk1 punto 16v .... mk1 punto 8v 75 engines are an easy swap or even a 1.4 16v ?
or what is the best recomended engine swap for these???

Too costly for the benefits & modified car insurance costs.

Save up for a Punto with a bigger engine fitted as standard.

im 23 with several years no claims so insurance isnt really a problem, i want to do this as a project otherwise i would have bought a hgt etc...

iv done several engine swap before so shouldnt be a problem

Cool go for it then, pick your engine & pop it in... I still think even at the old age of 23 you should check the insurance including all the modifications though...

any idea what engine best suits, well here in ireland my insurance wasnt crazy on my cinq with 1242 punto 75 engine conversion, novitec exhaust system, induction kit etc all declared

cheers dave, do you no of anybody on here that has sucessfully got one set up?

Get the full ECU and keys set from the donor.
Engine ECU
Body computer
Immobiliser
ignition key (swap transponder)
Instrument panel (maybe - but its all integrated so a risk without)
Cabling to suit.

Ideally get better brakes as well. Dont bother with HGT rear discs. Heavy and no more power than the drums.

If donor had ABS you will need all of that as it will otherwise show the ABS warning light = MOT fail.

All that for a fairly ordinary result. :p
Now go for an Alfa 2.0TS and we are really talking. :)

Can't see anyone getting the canbus and FBW stuff working from a 1.4 16v ECU on a Mk2 Punto!

GSR like the 1.2 16v ECU which I'd recon can be remapped to cope with a 1.4 16v, if you're near them. People have used Emerald, Canems and Megasquirt on the Cento 1.4 16v, so any aftermarket ECU can run them just fine.

Yep - canbus isnt likely to work in a Mk2. It's probably cheaper with all original kit from a donor car. A bare engine from a breakers could be the most costly option.

For all the work involved, it makes sense to go the whole hog. Just avoid the 20V engines - too big, too heavy and not especially powerful.

the only reason i think i wouldnt use the alfa would be that id would say gearbox, linkages and new drive shafts e.t.c would have to be used?

Shafts can be shortened probably by specialists. If the box is the same as HGT Punto, the linkage etc is probably the same.

I know someone who has a spare engine under a workbench -- robbed from a coupe, but maybe people are wise to that now?

And, being EVO, those costs are probably for the mechanically incompetent!

I've a sneaking suspicion that the HGT uses the engine and box (maybe the driveshafts, certainly not the brakes) from the 1.8 version of the old 155 (not the Mito 155, which is a Grande Punto Abarth in drag) so the 2 litre engine should fit.

I was recently looking at a late model (twin variator) 2.0 TS engine unit. The block & gearbox looked very similar to my Punto HGT. There is a very good chance it would fit but the issue will be electronics and instruments.
