i just bought new pads for the front and back, now I'm wondering if i NEED to get new discs or will these rusty rotas be OK for another set of pads? the cars done under 30k.

You should change discs when they've worn too thin (check the lip on the outside of the disc) not because they've got a bit of rust of them.

At 30k I'd say there's NO chance your rears need changing unless you use the brake pedal as footrest

Hi Argonought. How big a lip are we talking here?

there's probably a <1mm lip on all of the discs, they don't look thin at all really, i don't want to have to change them if its not necessary but if they will need doing in under 5k miles then i may as well do them now.

1mm is nothing mate,you got a few mm left after that, you should be fine with another set of pads.

yup get a wire brush round em nothing wrong with those discs, just go steady bedding the new pads in



did you get mintex pads by any chance???

there a bit worn but will go again.

Plenty of life left in those discs.

A lip round the edge is normal after a while but they don't automatically need replacing.

the thickness of the disc? they were never 20mm thick when they were new?

They are if you measure from the rear face to the front face including the disc vent in between.

thats good mintex should give a free set of ear defenders with their pads, mine squeal like a biatch

yeah i read on here that they were a little noisy, so i went for the ebc. i would have bought the mintex discs if mine needed replacing.

mine squeal but aren't mintex, they some cheap brand, gonna see if copper grease on back of pads helps

im getting new discs at next pad change- which will be 60k plus.

i have never had a warning on service or MOT about my discs.

My brother on the other hand has a 55 micra on 20k with severly worn discs 'as he was taught to drive using the brakes all the time'
