I have searched for wiper problems and fixes, but I can't find any that actually match the problem I encountered - let me explain

I had problems with my wipers on the M6 on Friday!!

It had been raining for a couple of hours and I had the wipers on auto (rain was a bit variable) all was OK - then the auto wipe seemed stop working, but changing the sensitivity got them going again. A little while later the rain got very heavy and the wipers stopped (they parked, not sopped mid wipe) - changing the auto sensitivity didn't help neither did changing the switch to on or fast.

I pulled over onto the hard shoulder - then the wipers started working again.

I drove off again and 2 minutes later the wipers stopped once more!

I pulled over and started twice more in quick succession before luckily reaching a services - I stopped for a coffee went back to the car and all was OK and has been since!

I suspect it wasn't the motor, as the wipers parked themselves - could it have been that I had them on auto? Did a relay get hot and the body control protect it?

Does anyone have any idea what may have caused this odd behaviour?

if the rain sensor is mucky, one above the rearview mirror on the outside of the glass, this does exactly the same as mine... give it a good clean!
