Just bought a 78 Spider (my second one). It's a California car...NO rust anywhere, 94,000 original miles. Excellent shape... EXCEPT.... The steering is EXTREMELY tight and not smooth, very jerky when I have to turn. It also makes what I can only describe as a rubbing or creaking sound when I turn. The steering challenge and sound seems greater when turning right. I read somewhere that it could be a steering idler. How can I find out and does anybody have any other suggestions? Also, is the steering idler something I can fix subject to ordering the part?

Thanks for your help.

Adam

Sounds like one of two problems: 1. The steering idler is bad or needs lubrication or 2. the steering box is bad or the screw to adjust out excessive play has been overtightened.

Also check the tie rod ends and center link.
