There are a few sites on the internet that do them, just do a search and it'll bring up loads. But read their disclaimer, it says they are show plates only! If the DVLA don't have a log that you've had a new numberplate done, and they find out, you will get fined.

Every one we make now goes into the DVLA system so they can see what plates are being made and for whom. So those plates you'll probably find aren't legal on your car :)

Techincally you are correct the plates on my car are illgel how ever i do beilive that the laws that govern your number plates came in at a certain time period few years ago or something and soo if your car is older then when yhis law came in and the plates were on the car before the law came in you are not by law forced to change them as there must be millions of older cars that have the number plates with out BS standard in the corner wich is the only thing that is not legal about my plates. obviously this wont apply to the blatetnly illegal like black plates ot big pictures all over em etc etc . but if anyone asks they have allways been on my car wich they have :D and they cant prove otherwise.

Went to a local motor factors thati got from a government website as an approved maker.

£15 all in for the front and back. Took 10 mins and although there are a few very small bubbles, and one or two specs of dust, its a lot better than the halfords ones, so im happy.

He needed the V5 to make them, but only had a very brief look at my licence before handing it back to me.

Fitted them with sticky pads for a cleaner look :)

Cheers for your help everyone, I'm glad I took them back (y)

All you need to know about the DVLA rules is here:

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/inf104.pdf

what it doesn't make clear, is if you are allowed watermarks, borders and sub text along with the new format lettering? Or do they want them all the be plain apart from the optional GB logo?

I would advise against mounting with sticky pads. I know it looks tidy but you can get special security fixings that give the same effect.
Sticky pads make it too easy for somebody with the same car as you to pull your plates off, stick em on thier car off they go for a cruise leaving you with the speeding ticket! (n)

The new rules which require you to show your V5 were put in place to stop people simply spotting another similar car and getting fake plates made up, but what it now means is criminals are more likely to actualy take the plates from your car!

I didn't know about this law and I got mine off a website, but being an R Reg I can always say it was like that ;)

Yeah, it's only for cars registered after the law came in, or for new plates.

Nobody's gonna look twice to check the font style on an older car unless it's some stupid style you can't read.

The cops, believe it or not aren't total arses, they pick on people who are too cocky for thier own good. those who put bit's of black tape on thier plates to make different letters for example deserve everything they get!

If you don't drive like a tw@t and you can read your plates from whatever the required distance is (60ft?) then I'm sure they have better things to do than hassle you about it.

My mate has a suped up honda civic and refuses to put his number plate on the front bumper. Instead it's on his dash where you would have to be stood on his bonnet to read it, but so far he hasn't even been pulled for it.

The laws regarding the lettering and styles are as follows... we are only allowed to make LEGAL number plates and this is what we can make:

1) You can have Plain, 3D or Carbon lettering
2) You can have red, green, blue or black border
3) You can have GB, UK, England, Wales flag on the left

I also believe you are allowed a small amount of lettering at the bottom of the numberplate as my local motor factor is allowed to do all the above plus this and all the plates are legal.

You can also have "hi-line" lettering, but i think they look a bit poo TBH anyway.

i'm amazed they blamed the lubricant, maybe we do it differently, but the proccess of making number plates is simple, place down the reflective sheet, lay out the letters, then get a bit of plastic (nothing printed on it) spray the back to stop static, and then place that on top, run though some rollers a couple of times, job done.

the only liquid used it the stuff to stop the static electricity picking up the letters and moving them out of place (common on i/1's)

in future if this happens to anyone else, take them back but be really nice, ask for the manager then just say something like "hi there mate, look i bought these as my old ones were going to fail the mot, i took it in and it still failed because of your plates, do you think you could make another pair up for me?" then when he takes you to the desk, mention i cost you £40 quid to retake the mot and ask to see if they can use carbon lettering and a border/gb background, go full whack, generally they'll chuck you something as compensation.:)... well our manager would anyway :p

I can vouch for that at my Halfords down my neck of the woods too :)

We make it the same OXCiD3 although apparently some Halfrauds have the computerised machines that do it all for them :chin: lazy!
