My view is that any government cannot ever lower tax. If they get rid of one tax they have to introduce another. So it annoys me when they say they can. Therefore I don't want taxes lowered - for me that's unrealistic.

The only way taxes would be lowered is if we pulled out of the EU, as we give the EU £100 million PER DAY just to stay in it (ok we DO get half back, but only to fund projects like the blinking eye bridge at newcastle/gateshead), then we could use that money to lower taxes.

If there is anybody who can vote for linda arkley in the north tyneside mayoral elections, please dont, as she closed down my local community centre (amongst other things, it had a youths mechanic course and a sports hall, to keep local kids out of trouble).

I like that bridge it's cool! You are right though it costs us a fortune to be in the EU and we are largely subsidising other not-quite-so-rich counties like Spain and Greece, a situation which will only get worse.

I'm all for the common market, breaking down import tax barriers etc, but the crazy politics and money that goes in elsewhere I am totally against!

Pulling out of the EU would be disasterous in the long term.

Do you know what made me laugh today?

COnservatives put one of their "IT'S NOT RACIST TO IMPOSE LIMITS ON IMMIGRATION" in Rusholme, Manchester. If you don't know Rusholme I guess you won't get why myself and several others were laughing, oh, we continued our laughing when one of our friends said he is voting conservative.

Reason? Nothing manifesto based he said, couldn't give me a reason. He said a policy like "limits on immigration" is good because is gives a measurable result? Eh? I said would he vote for a party that stated they would kill homosexuals because it's "quantifiable", his answer was no.

Personally I would rather we were a state of the US than a state of the EU. At least we share a common language, history, measures and we tend to be on the same side when we fight wars, whihc is more than you can say for many of our EU neighbours. Only half of our trade is done with that horrible lots and we managed to do that quite nicely under the EEC thank you very much, if you had read DrPepper's post you would have seen that trading is a very different thing to the interference we currently have to put up with. Gievn the option I would glady return to free trade days, which personally I don't see why we can't have worldwide.

Oh yes, the Americans, the people who "sooo give a ****" about us. The same country who put tax on all steel imports (illegally) to stimulate their own market, damaging out already dying steel exporters. Etc. etc. I am sure we could give 100000 examples of this.

I also believe the fact that France is a 20 minute swim is more important than America sharing a similar language.

What I meant by my comment is that without either America or Europe, we will not survive in this world as any sort of power. Personally since the US doesn't give a damn about us and all of Europe is made up of countries of similar size and need then I would rather be with them.

Who we thought a war with or against 60 years ago isn't really that important, survivability as a nation is.

TAXES! dont talk to me about taxes whats the point in working my b******s off all week to have some suited office accountant take a considerably large chunk out of it! why should i have to help people who cant be bothered to get off there arse and get a job,why should i help all these bloody immigrants coming into the country, why do i pay road tax, have these politcians actually drove down a normal street, where half the road has been dug up for months with cones round it but no workmen have been seen for weeks!? i am not a racist, but the asians have got the system sussed out so well that no wonder they fetch all the family over, when they can have seven/eight kids and take home more money then me and g/f who work all the hours god sends just to make do,TAXES BLOODY TAXES,now that subject gets me angry   :bang: :bang:

They are also limiting the number of foreign doctors, nurses and cleaners Dave that can come into the country, also their cut backs mean that less workers will clean hospitals. Obviously though since the conservatives are in power everybody will work harder and more efficiently....lol.

Puntobloke, you misunderstand taxes and you misunderstand immigration. I personally take offence to your comments about immigration since I am from an immigrant family.

I'm glad you wrote this because it makes replying a lot easier.

I don't know about anybody else but personally I think we can survive perfectly well enough without a seperate govenment to tell our market traders which units of weight to use. I think we can survive just fine without the EU using our money to pay farmers to cut down their hedges, pay them produce more crops then pay them to throw them away, and finally pay them to put the hedges up again. I also think our survivability as a nation would remain secure despite not paying millions upon millions into the EU so that they can have some new roads in Spain.

I think your hatred of the Americans is pretty much unjust. All governments go to desperate measures to save their vital industries, and what else have you got against them? They went to war in "I-rac", well guess what so did we.

Finally, if you can swim the channel in 20 mins you obviously surpassed my primary school achievements at a grade 5 swimmer!:D

And puntobloke, I agree with you on immigration. I don't think you are being racist at all and I think the majority will also hold this view. I'm with the tories on this. But not their stupid tax/spend plans.

I don't really care, either way (labour or conserv.) none of them are really gonna do what they say their gonna do, unless they've said they're gonna raise taxes, fuel prices, cut military funding etc...... in which case i won't vote for em. I do like watching bremner, bird and fortune tho', quite humorous!

I thought that would add a little comedy to it.

The EU will work both ways, we're giving more than getting right now, in 10 years time it could be the other way around.

You know full well that I am not saying that we shoulud have a separate government or a body that over rules all the decisions that our company makes. By surviability what I mean is that as a country of 60 million or so, in a world of 6 billion, we make up less than 1% of the global population. If we say we want (for instance) sea borders moved to 22 miles from the coast where possible to prevent Spanish fisherman from using our fishing areas we are likely to ignored. As Europe as a whole with (I don't know the actual number but I expect I am over-estimating 450 million we nearly have 10% of the world's population and a major number of players in the top 10 economic markets of the worlds. If we made a group decision then we would have more of a chance to get somewhere.

We have done fine in the past due to our skill of going to a country, ripping it off to the ground then letting them fix the problems we have caused. In a "modern" society, ignoring Afghanistan & I-rac (i like what you've done with that ;)) we can't get away with this any longer. It is my opinion that Britain will not last long as a major world player and the only way we can possibly prevent this is by being part of a bigger Union.

I don't just say this because I like French cars....lol. I do think and consider what I am talking about.

You're joking right Richard? You reckon the Tory policies in this area are correct?

"Sorry mate, already have 18 nurses from Sudan this month, you'll have to go back"

"You may be the best surgeon in neurology in the world but right now we just took two cleaners from Iraq and those gunshot wounds from rebels who want to kill you aren't that bad, you cleaned them up nicely"

"Sorry Mr Smith, I know you fought with us in Iraq and earnt the victoria cross under the command of the British army but we have no spaces left for war heros, although if we ever have another war we will be happy to let you fight for us again"
