Re: AV voting?

It's 'cos all the old fogeys can't use Facebook and they're scared of change, that's why we've not heard of many "NO" voters!

If this had been an AV poll and the 3 people that voted "Other" had put "NO" as their 2nd choice. The "NOs" would have won with 17 votes (51.51%). Despite only 14 people (42.42%) actually wanting "NO" originally.

Re: AV voting?

Except that those 3 people are probably quite likely to be the people that don't/won't vote at all

Probably as people who want change are more vocal. That and not everybody is on facebook and its more likely to be young people.

We still havent got a single result in NI.

EDIT: Some places are just STARTING to count the ballots. First turnout figures are coming through. AV vote looks like going to no over here too, but its VERY early days

I went to 3 meetings and YES predominated there too so there is a strong move for electoral reform - although I think more for PR.

NI result should be interesting as I think you said you use STV already?
.....and are the Lib Dems unpopular in NI?

We dont even have the lib dems over here though they are allies of "alliance". Labour are allied to the "SDLP" and Conservatives were allied to "UUP" in the westminster elections but are running seperately this time so not sure whats going on there.

I doubt AV preferences will have much effect on the parties elected in NI. Its too distant from us (remember we are electing our assembley as well as councils).

The point I made about everybody getting in was in relation to the likes of the "womens coalition", the "PUP" got in to the assembly (they are directly linked to the UVF) with just 0.6% of the vote in 2007. This year we have a total of 14 parties standing (plus 15 independants) for election to the assembly so its a little more complicated over here. THe STV system vastly increases the opportunity for small parties to get elected, hence why UKIP are pushing it in the UK.

Last constituency has finally started counting!

And also "other" can't be a final decision (in this context) and so can't be part of an AV selection which means you're back to 2 choices.

Can't help thinking the real referendum should have had a 3rd choice though like "Don't know" or "Don't really understand the question".

I somehow assumed the AV question would be a separate optional like question but basically it was thrust in the face of everyone entering the polling station. Quite apart from all the Clegg business and all the lies and rubbish churned out by the NO camp it wouldn't have surprised me if lots of people naturally answered NO anyway due to confusion.

It struck me the whole business was badly thought out

Re: AV voting?

I had a rethink, and I would go with a NO vote as well.

When you ask a group of people in any other situation what would be best, you go with what the majority say - it's fair.

Be it where should we go out to tonight, or what food should we eat....

Re: AV voting?

That video is so missing the point.

The vote should have been 4 PUBS - not just throw in a coffee shop.

If I was in a group of 10 mates, and we were choosing something to eat and we did:

3 mexican
4 indian
2 american
1 greek

It would be really sour grapes to vote again just because 5 people didn't say Indian!!

Not really

The majority might still prefer Mexican or Indian. AV makes a clean choice for you.

Obviously it's only an example (not what you might do in real life) but most people think it's clear enough. I was aware of the principle of AV before viewing so possibly I missed some subtleties - but there are many variants on the idea of keeping most people happy
