Alternative Vote vs First Past The Post

  • Yes, AV.

  • No, FPTP

  • Other, Don't Care, Undecided

    Votes: 7 15.6%

  • Total voters

If this had been an AV poll and the 3 people that voted "Other" had put "NO" as their 2nd choice. The "NOs" would have won with 17 votes (51.51%). :) Despite only 14 people (42.42%) actually wanting "NO" originally.

Except that those 3 people are probably quite likely to be the people that don't/won't vote at all :p
And also "other" can't be a final decision (in this context) and so can't be part of an AV selection which means you're back to 2 choices.

Can't help thinking the real referendum should have had a 3rd choice though like "Don't know" or "Don't really understand the question".

I somehow assumed the AV question would be a separate optional like question but basically it was thrust in the face of everyone entering the polling station. Quite apart from all the Clegg business and all the lies and rubbish churned out by the NO camp it wouldn't have surprised me if lots of people naturally answered NO anyway due to confusion.

It struck me the whole business was badly thought out :(

That video is so missing the point.

If I was in a group of 10 mates, and we were choosing something to eat and we did:

3 mexican
4 indian
2 american
1 greek

It would be really sour grapes to vote again just because 5 people didn't say Indian!!
Not really

The majority might still prefer Mexican or Indian. AV makes a clean choice for you.

Obviously it's only an example (not what you might do in real life) but most people think it's clear enough. I was aware of the principle of AV before viewing so possibly I missed some subtleties - but there are many variants on the idea of keeping most people happy

I've voted "Yes". I'm sick of the first past the vote system and the polarised result we get in the UK.

Anything that assists this gentleman's entry into parliament can only be a good thing, in my view:

People tend to either love him or hate him........ ;)
