James, was going to suggest the Rover also and Chris has a good point with the Saab too but the ideal choice has to be something from the Volvo stable, S60 or S80 perhaps of Neo if you can handle it a S/V70, these could handle your needs no problem for the price.

Looks like the only thing that fits the bill from the Volvo stable is the S60 T5 and it is out of my price range, I could only afford the 2.0 Turbo.

Tell a lie I could also afford an S80 T6, which would fit the bill, if I could find one at the right price with reasonable mileage.

Plus as I have already mentioned, I don't particularly like the 3-series, because I think they drive like a tank. I did like the classic style 3-series, but they stopped those in about 1990.

E30 3 series (the more classic shape, not any of the new shapes) is the way to go. Also the new 3 series is surprisingly more nimble than you think, certainly feels heavier than the original, but its less tail happy.

Dave, correct me if I'm wrong, but the coupé is still only front wheel drive? Where as the 6 cylinder bm is rear wheel drive, and about as stable as a crazy horse (no pun intended). What could ever be more fun?

I have only ever seen one in the UK (and one in france) driving (saw one once parked in a dealership too). It was a very cold day and I heard this rumble whilst waiting for a bus. A beautiful blue and silver/grey one pulled up in the traffic, a 30 something with his partner in it, both with scalves, hats, gloves etc. Looked freezing.

But the car was something else, it was so unusual to see, I have seen 100 Ferraris or more lets say in my life but only one Spider like that. The drone of the engine was just superb and one of the things I can remember is the exhaust smoke (being a very cold day) just drifting accross from the back and raising up, as if some sort of hot fire wanting to take off (I have never been good with my descriptions). I was just left with my mouth open and drooling. There are few cars that do that to me!

I have no idea if they're quick or any good but I do know if i could ever afford one and it was my inpractical car, I would have one.

As far as I know, the Wind is replacing it:

YEP, awful name!

Sadly can't find a picture of that Spider I fell in love with, i think the yellow looks awful, the red is too plain, black looks lotusy.

Looking at Volvo's a little more, I could get a C70 T5, within budget, tempting.

By the way, something I didn't mention is that I would prefer 3 door to 5 door, it's a pain in the arse getting the kids in and out, but at least they are not constantly playing with bits of the car.

Neo, I adore the C70! Also saw a family of 4 (2 teens and parents) camp with one for 4 days - the bus must be a lot bigger than most cabriolets!

C70 T5 = cool!

Yep, plenty of room for the kids even allowing for growth, if I keep it for 4-5 years and whilst not as quick as the 20V version of the Fiat Coop, 0 - 60 in 6.5 is hardly sluggish, especially for such a large car, likewise 28 mpg mixed cycle is bearable for the size of vehicle and engine.

Ohhh yes! Cheers Serin, I can drool once again! Trust me, it looks 10x better in real life/with a proper picture.

you said you like the fto but wanted gto performance, why not have a gto? the twin turbo is seriously quick and even the non turbo isnt slow, could probably get a subra for the same money. Theyre also jap cars so they should be reliable as well. They are getting on a bit now though

My old mans trading his saab 95 aero estate for £7k if you want one lol :p
and dont mind insurance group 17

Grale, too old.

And also way over your budget for a good one! :)

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned the Ford Mondeo ST200, 2.5L V6 202bhp 173lb/ft torque 146mph top end and 0-60 in 7.9 secs and still returns mid 20's mpg. 2000/2001 model for your money.

Or Peugeot 306GTi-6 2L 167bhp 142lb/ft torque 140mph 0-60 7.2secs hi 20's to 30 mpg. 1999/2000 for your money.

VW Golf VR6 2.8L V6 174bhp 170 lb/ft torque 138mph 0-60 7.1secs low to mid 20's mpg. 1997/98 for your money.

Peugeot 406 V6 Coupe 3L 194bhp 201lbs/ft torque 142mph 0-60 6.8secs mid 20's mpg. 1999/2000 model for your money.

Hey Aaron, you trying to steal my job? LOL!

Neo's question was one that dude in the Top Gear mag blue pages section from years ago couldn't answer, can't remember his name but you sent in a Neo style question and he gave some examples.

The Volvo is a winner though!
