BMW any day, unless you're a cabby then a Merc lol. I find Mercs generally too squidgy to have much fun in, BMWs are tighter and more responsive without being uncomfortable. Plus BMW engines are better than Mercedes ones, they last longer and are usually more powerful per litre. Ive had many BMWs and a couple of Mercs so ive had time to compare lol

Plus the number of Mercedes I see with the badges replaced with, shall we say questionable alternatives puts me right off.

Off hand, I can't think of a car that is worse than the ones that preceded it. Even so, my choices would be one of each.

These cars were up against the Jaguar XJ6. The Merc was similar except for one important fact. You could have the option of a 6.9 litre V8.

The BMW 3.0 S and Si were so modern they made the Jag and the Merc seem obsolete overnight. I spent quite a few of hours of my early life in my Uncle's Jag Mk 2, S-Type and BMW 3.0S - no jokes please.

pfft anyone can drift in the wet. A real pro does it when its bone dry :slayer:

That's true but with a 400hp rwd car drifting in the dry wouldn't be that difficult if you know how to do it.What impresses me is the car control this guy achieves , which is-I believe, don't know if I'm right- harder to manage in the wet with such a powerful car.Detatching the rear end is easy , but holding it there to complete a perfect drift throughout the turn is difficult and I think it's easier to lose control in the wet..

Your comment reminded me of that stupid show called "will it drift" that steve sutcliffe presents(I totally dislike the guy). The "funniest" episode is the one in which Steve , dressed as an old lady , "manages" to drift a Lambo Murcielago(!!!!!).In the wet!!!!!LOL..

With the original question, I have to say that Mercedes are now my preference. 5/6 years ago, before they started having a mass restyle to make them look mean I wouldn't have touched with a barge pole!

The OP's comments about BMWs having better engines I don't think is necessarily true. OK, BMW's diesels are better, but I think that the petrols are slowly being outclassed by Mercedes' engines. What are BMW churning out at the moment that has 660bhp with 738lb-ft of torque? That's 150bhp and nearly 350 lb-ft more than the M5!

It's a similar situation with M3 & C Class AMG and the outgoing E Class AMG and M5.

And on the styling front, I have to say I would jump at a new Merc over a new BMW any day! Strictly based on looks of equivalent models - my preference emboldened:

  • 1 Series - A Class (not really comparable as aren't designed to compete but if forced to choose I'd have the 1 Series)
  • 3 Series - C Class
  • 5 Series - New E Class/CLS
  • 6 Series - SL Series
  • X5 - GL/M Class
That all said, I will say that handling on the Merc is not as good as in a BMW. But they are considerably more comfortable and more refined (road noise/ride).

Anyway, just my thoughts of course!

Hi Garee , I liked your post a lot cause it's very...explaining!!Everybody's got their own taste..And I really get what you mean about mercs being much more beautiful than they used to.CLS, new C, S, CL , B , GLK are all very beautiful and dynamic(in looks) cars that would have never been built by the old MB.They changed-or better, enlarged-their target group to younger or anyway sportier people like ex-BMW,AUDI etc buyers.
What you didn't say was that bimmers are much uglier than they used to be.At least according to many people(but not to me).Due to the """"""""talented""""""""(LOOOOOL) Chris Bangle.Thank god they changed him for sb else.
Abou the engines, though , I'll have to disagree.A BMW engine is better by any means, meaning that it produces more hp per cc , it's more smooth in power delivery(The curve is going up in an almost steady rate) , way more reliable , and with a much tastier sound(that tottaly characteristic BMW engine sound-especially in straight 6 engines). The fact that Merc's more powerful engine is stronger than the BMW's one doesn't mean a thing.I could through a kompressor or a turbo in a 6 liter engine and there come the 700 horses your talking about. The M5's engine is so much awarded cause it's atmospheric , very high-revving and has an hp/cc rate greater than 1.(taking 5000cc as 500 for calculation reasons).I don't reckon any awards for the SLR's engine(That's the one you're talking about right?).There also was a limited version called SLR722 with 722 hp out of the same engine.AND , SLR is a Mclaren-Mercedes , not a "just'' Mercedes...Sth else.Talking about Mclaren , do you know that it's most famous car-the fabulous Mclaren F1-had a BMW engine?

sorry but i prefer....

Saying Mercedes is better than BMW is like saying Daewoo is better than Fiat.

Mercedes are for old farty men.

Dpr59 I can see a point in what you're saying. But Jags aren't as good as they used to be.Except for the really new ones-XF and XK- which are quite impressive. But I wouldn't get em.It feels as you're paying far too much for the name than the car itself. Is an XF better than a 5 series of the same cost?To me, it isn't..The XK is a different story.Actually , there is no BMW opponent to her , and it's waaaay better than the ugly 6 series.I'd prefer it to a Merc SL.

Jaguar have just COMPLETELY ripped off Aston Martin with their new range. Let me point it out...

It's even worse from the rear.
