Panda passed me today with simple neat but effective homemade cross bars

only saw it for a second or two

appeared to be four studs, then four nuts, Two structural aluminium with holes correctly spaced topped off with four more bolts.

probable had washers and would be sensible to lock the studs in place with a nut

seen the aluminium bars before. Its some kind of modular system for building custom equipment like desks.

Maybe 80/20 T frame aluminium extrusion? I know I've considered it for similar constructions.

it was a rectangular box section flat on top possibly bottom ribbed on the sides.

just had a quick Google search but failed. Annoyingly I am sure I have handled some in the past.

maybe something like a gazebo ?

It the second home made roof bars I have seen locally. The other is some sort of thick laminated wood on a vintage Suzuki wagon R

I can't find an exact match

very similar to some Thule universal

I bet they have reused the rails from an old cars roof rack and drilled some holes in them to repurpose them !

Its the kind of thing I would do. I dont like chucking things out. If I had an old roof rack lying around I would reuse it if I could
