Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I've searched extensively for a solution but was surprised to find nothing available.

I have a right-hand-drive 2007 Panda Dynamic Multijet Diesel that is currently registered in the UK. Since recently moving to France I am going through the process of registering it here, however it has come up against a snag because the pedantic person who received my application has said that the rear fog lamp needs to be on the left hand side of the car. Note that the car has passed the Contrôle technique which is the French equivalent of a UK MOT so is technically road-worthy in France.

Being somewhat practical I was hoping to do this myself to avoid unnecessary expenses, but having looked at the wiring in the boot it doesn't appear to be a straightforward process to swap the control from one side to the other.

Is anyone able to provide advice on how I might be able to address this myself or point me to any online guides for doing it? Many thanks.

the bulbs and wiring for reversing and fog are just swapped over for LHD and RHD cars

you can just swap two wires over along the lenses

I strongly advise you. If you are not electronically minded / qualified to use the services of an auto electrician

you can remove the trim ready so it a nice quick job

anyone who fits tow bars should be able to do this in under 15 minutes

Thanks for your reply koalar. Can you tell me which wires it is that need changing and at what point? I'm assuming it's before they split to send one set of wires from the right to the left of the car.

I've changed electric plugs on appliances after moving from Aus to UK and again after moving here so I do feel comfortable with simple electrical stuff, but I'm debating whether I would attempt this myself after seeing the cluster of wires involved.

I'd be grateful if you could provide some further details, thanks again.

back probe the cluster with a volt meter.

toggle the reverse or fog and see which wire matches

I am pretty sure if you follow the wires they are both in a bungle that runs down the left side of the car.

pierce the insulation and double check that they are only active when in use, cut, slip on some heatshrink tubing, swap wires over, solder and seal back up

But the reversing is directly operated by the body computer. Get this wrong and expect an expensive puff of smoke.

I dont like discouraging someone from having a try. Normally the only thing you can damage is the part your trying to fit or remove. But get this wrong and its going to around £1K to put right.

I can't tell you what colour wires. Take a look at a thread on a faulty oil pressure switch. The poster had a solid green wire. None of the three circuit diagrams I was looking at corresponded.

STOP! you do NOT have to change any wiring.
The Fog light positioon can be set using the CAN setup and Proxi alignment function of Multiecuscan (www.multiecuscan.net) or the Fiat diagnostic software. Under CAN set-up, Adjustments, Excecute, the rear Foglamp can be set to none, left, right or both.

You can download MES for free and run in simulation mode to see this yourself without any interface or connection to the car.

An authorised dealer can also do this but the charge can vary, often it is more than a registered copy of MES, an ELM327 interface and adaptor lead (yellow) which is about €100.

Do you really think Fiat have different looms or swap wires around depending on the foglight positon? It is set in "software" i.e. CAN setup.

Nope

But I didn’t know it could be changed in MultiECUscan.

But the wire swap has been used on Puntos, Stilos etc and
works

Unfortunately full MES plus interface is around £130 so going to need someone local with MES

MES is about that from Gendan (good support which you pay for) but a interface and leads can be had for <£30

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162564786834
and MES registration is €50 or £43 so closer to £75 than £130. Even £130 is less than some dealers have charged for a diagnostic session.

OP is in France so OBDAUTO www.obdauto.fr are the local agent for MES

Thanks for all the advice, I'm very grateful.

I'll do some research to find out if the software switch is available on my model and proceed from there.

Thanks once again for the helpful advice. I've run the simulation and can confirm that my model of Panda only has Enabled and Disabled options for the fog lights.

Back to option 1. Wish me luck ;) :D

if you are unsure I can see if I can find the correct wiring diagram that matches.

not only will there be several but the letters for the colour of wires will be for the Italian colours.

I will be out all tomorrow though

I can also have a look on a 2010 version after tomorrow if you like.

Often by using different ECU models for different markets. Doesn’t mean it can be changed on all vehicles at a later date once it’s left the factory unfortunately. Although handy on those that it can.

Surely you need to exchange the light units so the coloured lens is on the right side of the car. I used to have a Golf, and when fitting a towbar I wanted to test my wiring, so grabbed the nearest unit and plugged it in. It was quite affronted that the right light was connected to the left wiring loom. I wonder if changing the light units for continental ones would have the desired effect without further ado. The Golf was quite happy when the correct light units were put on the correct wires. Close examination of the light unit showed no clue as to how this magic occurred. They looked identical as did the bulb holders excepting the handed shapes. Linking wires is straight forward if you have some spare wire and a soldering iron, but I wouldn't bet on it having the desired effect.

A Lot of VAG cars use CAN modules in the lights themselves so only connection is power Gnd and CAN bus. The system knws what sort of light you connect. Even my early S4 had a CAN operated interior light!

I just had the bulb holder connected, but it looked totally standard. What do these modules look like? Or is this all in the ECU. I still cant work out the logic. This was the first of many can bus controlled cars to which I have fitted tow bars incidentally. I was afeared of the mighty complications and consequences, of which there were none. Its just a tad more difficult to i/d thin wires with less slack. Anyone thinking of having a go I recommend carry on. I do confess to buying a proper kit this last time and also that it was easier than soldering my own connections.

Hi koalar,

Did you have any luck finding the wiring diagram for the 2003 model?

Many thanks.
