I have a Nosie which sounds like squeak/whine from I think the front end of the Panda 4x4 . The noise stops on right hand bends any ideas please ?

That article blows it's cover by saying the brakes should be replaced every 30,000 miles. That is simply not true. Serviced and checked annually (12000 to most folk) but not replaced regardless. The pads on my front brakes were replaced more than 35,000 miles ago and are barely 1/2 worn. The discs were still in good condition and continue to be good though will be replaced when the pads do wear out.

The poxy little covers on the 100HP front brakes are not worth the metal they are made of. But at least nothing could ever get stuck behind them. The M5 retaining bolts on mine sheared off so I did without them. To provide any useful protection they'd have to be a lot bigger and wrap around the disc. My front pads are (evenly) 1/2 worn with no sign of dirt build up or clogging with dust. I would argue a disc cover that was big enough to keep dirt off the brakes would increase the clogging effect of brake pad dust.

One of the rear brakes (which do have the tin covers) had worn unevenly because the handbrake mech was not fully releasing the inner pad. A new caliper sorted that, but the tin cover (fitted or not fitted) would not make a blind bit of difference.

Motorbikes have open discs and they do perfectly fine so I suspect the tin covers are there on cars, because they are there.

Not quite. A few years ago I got my boat out of the Adriatic sea on a ramp with fresh pebble on it. A bit of wheelslip and some stones flying around got my trailer out, but left a loud squeel. Cause I was to drive home the next day (1700 Km) the wheels had to come of to remove the offending pebble between disc and plate.
So it definitely can;)

A friend with a Honda Jazz ruined a disc after a top dressed road stone got wedged behind the disc cover. They hated the noise but kept driving and ground a nasty groove into the disc. A (previously) perfectly good pair of discs had to be replaced.

The whine has disappeared today which was the first time I have taken the Panda out for a few days . I will motor if it returns and keep you updated. Al thanks for your help
