Hi Guys.

i have just put a new starter motor on my panda as the old one was fubar and would let the car start.

i put the new one on last night and now the car still won’t start!! i have checked all earths and cleaned them all and still nothing.

there are no lights on the dash or anything. really annoyed as need an mot on it as my sei decided it didn’t like stopping!

any ideas why it’s not working?

Thanks Ed

Put the old one back on.. if that crawls over you KNOW its not the car ;)

Then if it looks dubious.. put jump leads and your foot into action to test this 'dead one' off the car ( you can do that with the 'old' one too)

So.. neither run with direct battery power?

Try your battery on the sei.. if it cranks that you know problem isnt battery power

If you havent uncoupled the starter from the bell housing yet..

Take a close.up photo of the cable attatchments

There are commonly made errors

Do not turn the key to start position until you have correctly fitted the brown wire with the big ring connector on the end.

When the key is turned to start position the brown wire goes live to activate the stated motor.
If the ring at the end of the brown wire touches metal while key turned it will be a short circuit and potentially set car on fire or burn the wiring beyond economical repair.

Post a picture of the parts you had left over after fitting new starter motor.
I'm thinking a plastic spacer of some kind.

I think we need to start at the beginning

the new and old starter are the same

the old one was fubar

doesn't help from this end of the keyboard

I don't even know if its cranking (Turning over)

after over 400,000 miles of Pandas and several years on here. I haven't as far as I remember seen or heard of a starter motor thats failed to start a car. The odds are against two

the things we have seen are skipped cam belts, flat batteries, faulty ignition switches and so on

without more information we are shooting blind

I was under the impression that if you turn the key the dash lights don't come on. Post 1. Is this correct. Without power to the ECU, Body computer and so on. Your not going to get anywhere

without the bit left over fitted

there's nothing pushing the small wire against this ? as far as I remember

Ok

As the pictures tell..

The copper rod is designed to be INSULATED from the starter body..

Without a spacer.. it doesnt function

YES it looks like you have no means of powering the solenoid

(None of this should stop a good motor spinning under your foot with jumpleads attatched though.. ) ;)
