It takes minutes to remove the internal cover panel and you can prove the cables by dribbling oil down from the gear lever end. If it improves, you know its cables if it doesn't then look inside the top of the gearbox to see if that roll pin is ok.

Saying that, if the cables move freely when disconnected at the gearbox, there's no reason to think corrosion is an issue.
