General Non abs brake master cylinder

Part Number is on the label stuck to the front as is the make. Is it a Bosch

There's about 8 different part numbers but I suspect they will all be the same

What appears to be the problem with it. I haven't seen on fail yet !

Ive fitted the new clutch master cylinder. It's a machined casting rather than steel tube with a welded flange and looks far better quality than the OEM item.

The pedal ball joint was a very tight fit - so much that I took the new cylinder off again to micrometer against the original. It was correct. You need pipe pliers on the push rod and pedal arm and a strong firm squeeze to click it into place.

The master cylinder hydraulic pipe end fitting was starting to corrode so it got a smear of red grease. Had it been there much longer I'd have not ben able to remove it from the old master cylinder.

The slave cylinder bleed nipple was flooding out fluid from the threads so I stripped down my old one (from 100HP) to find it was a good as new inside. I gave it some red grease where needed and put back together. However, the hydraulic coupling on the car was seized solid into the cylinder body. I gave up and wrapped the cylinder in rags while bleeding the system.

I will have to get another slave which will come with a pipe and end fitting but can bet the QD coupling is seized solid (aluminium body with unprotected stainless retainer springs). So that will mean using a pair of compression fittings to bypass the fancy coupling.

The long and short is -
(a) Prefilled master cylinder with pipe must be replaced along with a new slave. Protect the QD coupling by slathering the spring clips in red rubber grease.
(b) New cylinders with old pipes are possible, but first check the couplings into the cylinders can be extracted. If they are seized you will not be able to do the job without additional work.

Are my replies getting through to you

I received some more information from the OP

I had all brakes done with other things. The brake light is on continuely. The milage flashes on and off.All this has happened since brakes being done.My mechanic tells me I need aBrake Master Cylinder

which other might have ideas on

sound more like the brake switch needs adjusting to me

the reason I questioned the 500 is because they were produced after ABS was compulsory

I thought by 04 all Fiats had ABS but maybe wrong either way it looks to me you need a different mechanic ??

Does seem to be just a brake switch needing adjustment. Worrying that any mechanic might think a new master cylinder might cure such a fault. Might need a new mechanic.

ABS became compulsory around April/May 2004, so vehicles registered before that might not have it. Most manufacturers will fit new stuff early, and Fiat are usually good at that, so looks like this one sat around unsold for longer than most. Any issues causd by that will have been sorted long ago.

Our March 04 was ABS Free

So 4 to 6 months on non.ABS 169's in the UK

BUT they were s l o w sellers

(It wasnt a 'follow.on model'..)

Around 8 years since panda and uno left the UK showrooms.

They were excellent value..

Actives..were later badged Dynamic..
So good kit.. shame about the 'water drop' fabric seats
