Punto Mk2 was notorious for munching its input bearings. Presumably that oil feed is how Fiat dealt with it. But a failed bearing with pitted races is not a good sign.

its still very common

The gearbox is pretty tolerant to fairy worn bearings and still keeps going.

I but a 500 gearbox with 70K in. The input shaft bearing and seal wear fairly well gone. A millimetres or more of movement at the shafts end.

look on ebay tons with worn out input shaft seal which is due to slop in the bearing

Once the oil starts to escape into the bellhousing its not long until the bearing overheats and the plastic cage melts. Yes GRP technically.

That seriously makes me think a 2RS bearing would be a better option. Drill and plug the oil feed so it can't flood the seal and eventually over-fill the bearing. Greased bearings are fine where oil splash is inadequate, but a not when the "wet" side is flooded with oil.
