Hi,

I’ve got an issue on my 2008 4x4 Cross - the left side light in the headlight cluster is not illuminating on first click of the stalk.

I get a warning on the dash about check left side light.

Indicators are all working - it’s the little bulb in the main left cluster that’s not illuminating - right hand side is fine.

No 12v is making it through to the bulb fixture. Fuse is ok as right bulb works and so do all the other bulbs. I’ve traced the wiring as much as possible and it’s all original.

Someone suggested it may be the Body Control Module. Could this be the possible cause? Are the BCMs on these 169 Pandas interchangeable?

My part number is 51783784 but it looks like it may have been replaced as the top fixture has no screw. Can someone with a 4x4 Cross tell me the part number on their BCM below the dash please?

Thanks for any help.

It's more likely to be a dirty contact somewhere between BCM and the bulb or even the earrth connection. I have a bulb fault showing on the number plate lights but both are working. I need to get in there and check every contact.

Thanks Dave. The headlight is brand new, although the issue existed with the previous headlight too - so contact’s are good.

I’ll check the earth connector though and maybe run a new one. Thanks!

Same problem with a different light unit suggests a broken wire leading to the connector or a bad pin within the connector OR as you say a fault in the ECU. The "sewing pin through insulation method" should tell you if the wire is getting any voltage.

I believe the ECU Testing Ltd will test an ECU for minimal cost. You pay the delivery.

When I got my used "new" headlights I also got the big connector blocks. The originals were OK so had no need to get the soldering iron out.

BCB is coded to the ECM so none are a straight swap

Also has the key and radio information stored in it Except for some cassette radios

there are at least 18 different BCD versions by two manufactures but I don't know how interchangeable they are.

51783784 is the fiat part number. Which has only changed a couple of time.

in the last 3 years or so. I haven't seen or heard of a BCM failing.

its quite common for the light plugs / connectors to oxidise and go High resistance. In worst cases its been known to melt the White connector but the BCM has always survived so far

Thank you for the responses. I’m going to try solve this issue this weekend.

Does anyone know which wire plug going into the BCM are for the left side light bulb?

Trying to apply a little logic to this

If every feature controlled by the BCM had its own wire .. it would be 'covered in plugs'

I would get back to where front L+R light looms meet...bulkhead:scuttle probably..

And look for an earth and switched 12volts there (x2 obviously)

Comiserations.. I had this with a 3 year old car ..back in the day..
The single sidelight wire had a nick..and it was green and furry when it snapped

Our 169 never needed a bulb or fuse in 15 years... so its hard to point you to a failure spot :(

Take a jump wire from the opposite side light to the faulty light. Does it now work? Does the dashboard bulb warning change?

Use the pin technique to put 12V on the offending side light wire. Does the bulb light? If not your fault is between the pin and the filament. When done, you will need to put a dab of superglue into the pinhole to keep corrosion out.

An update.

With the help of an auto electrician friend I’ve determined the new headlight unit I bought from FIAT is faulty.

There is power at all the correct pins at the main connector to the cluster unit. But no power to the side light bulb connector unless the headlight is on...it still then doesn’t illuminate because the side light bulb connector doesn’t have earth. The fog light bulb holder gets power but no earth either that’s why it doesn’t illuminate.

So I’m going to try get another headlight unit from FIAT seeing as though this has failed less than a year since I bought it for £215. Hopefully they’ll replace it. If not...

If Fiat refuse to help, you can get into the headlights. Cut a hole in the side, do whatever needs to be done and replace the cut out piece with black acrylic mastic.

I did this with a standard Panda headlight when I broke the beam adjuster.

The biggest hassle is making sure any plastic saw dust gets removed.

Re: Body Control Module or Headlight Unit issue (4x4 Cross)

Still nothing from FIAT. I’m not impressed. FIAT don’t give a monkeys. They’ll happily order me a new one though at £215...

I’ve got to get this car through MOT on Saturday for my son whose using it at uni whilst working for the NHS.

Anyone with a wiring diagram so I figure out the what each of the coloured wires are?

Dipped beam is fine. I just need to get the side light and fog light working.

My plan is to splice into the correct wires before the connector and go directly to the bulb holders.

At the moment the side light bulb Holder has 12v on both sides (Not + & -) and no earth, and only after Dip beam is on... So there’s something clearly wrong in the internal headlight wiring. How FIAT can claim the unit is not the issue is beyond logical.

Fog light has no earth but has 12v at the connector, so I’m going to remove the Faulty internal earth connector and just earth the bulb holder directly to the correct wire coming into the connector.

MOT will demand the side light works so have to get that sorted use jump wires if necessary from the other side.

The spots are required to work. But if they are covered with black film they are no longer lights so you can remove the bulbs and sort out the wiring later.

For the longer term, the bumper you have will cost many hundreds to replace. 100HP bumper is £600 for primed plastic plus trims. Yours will be even worse. The replacement costs will right off the car. Put your special 4x4 bumper and headlights into storage to keep it safe.

A "standard" Panda bumper with standard lights would cost about £100 from eBay (£30 each light and £30 for bumper). It will need a matched rattle can paint job, but it will be a straight fit.

Have you pulled the connects off the body computer and inspected them

Battery disconnected obviously

monitors correct system operation and indicates any faults by turning on the failure warning lights on the instrument panel.
To turn on the parking lights, proceed as follows:

deactivate the side lights;
surn the ignition key to the OFF position
switch on the side lights
At the next kay on (ignition key turned on), the side lights come on when the parking light control is given.
The 'Follow me home' function is designed to keep the dipped headlamps and the side lights on after the engine has been switched off for a time of 30 seconds or multiples thereof.

Function programming is cancelled by maintaining the headlamp operated for not more than 2 seconds
The instrument panel displays the function activation time.
For further details, see the relevant function under DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION.

any update

just repaired an I10 with a weird lights problem. Turn the head lights on and there was a delay and then they came on. Flick the main beam a few times and they would randomly go off and not easily come back on. The problem turned out to be a blown side light

might be worth checking all the other bulbs

they make things too complicated. switch, bulb, or switch ,relay ,bulb was so much easier to deal with

Canbus was intended to use a single wire ring main power line linking every location (horn light modules, etc) with electronics at each location doing the switching according to multiplex signals sent down the same wire.

Instead, the auto industry has achieved the worst of both worlds - wire bundles AND electronics.

Fiat refused to replace the headlight blaming the BCM - which I could buy from them for another £850+vat and configuring etc... “We’re trained by Fiat” they said and “know what’s going on” they said...Stealers.

They would not accept that the internal wiring of the headlight was faulty. All the signals at the connector were good so it could not be the body control module. Everything pointed at it being a faulty light unit.

The solution was fairly simple according to my auto electrician friend - bypass the internal wiring.

So, as the side light bulb holder had two 12v wires and the fog light had no earth, I ran power & wires directly to the bulb holders from the connector (earth from battery negative). Everything now works with no dash warning lights.

No wires were cut to solve this. I used a £2.50 5w bulb holder off eBay that was a perfect fit for the side light hole. I left the non functioning one hanging inside the unit with no bulb. With the fog light I just disconnected the two internal wires and ran new wires to the spade connectors - one on the bulb & one in the bulb holder for earth. I used prong connectors inserted into the back of the main connector for bulb power from the BCM. Job done.

Thank you everyone for your input.
