Hi,
Our 2005 Panda 1.2 has got a problem I cant seem to be able to solve.
It starts and runs perfectly for about 30 seconds then peters out, it has a full tank of petrol have put new set of spark plugs in and a new fuel pump no change.
I have put a code reader on it no codes shown. I am now out of ideas
Any one had this experience?
Help!!

My first thought is that fuel is not getting through properly for some reason.

This is a long shot, but try again with the fuel filler cap off. The pressure equalising valve may be blocked, causing a partial vacuum in the fuel tank- this is most noticeable when the tank is full.

If you are DIY minded you can take out the back seat base and hot wire the fuel pump. You will need some small spade crimps to safely connect the wires but a wire taken to the battery will run the fuel pump continuously regardless of the electronic control systems.

Immobiliser could be an issue try your spare key.

Crank position sensor is another. You get no errors when they stop working because the ECU assumes the engine stalled.

The radio?
Bird song?

I hear a faint hum from under the back seat in my car for a couple of seconds every time I switch the ignition on ?

You must have turned the radio off
And shot the birds

I had a similar issue with an old Stilo JTD.

From time to time, started up fine, but the accelerator wouldn't do anything and it would then cut out. Also did it every now and again while driving.

Ended up being damp getting into the ECU plugs. It shorted out the fbw throttle. Sprayed water dispersant into plugs and sockets, let it dry, and it was fine....bit of silicone around top of plugs to stop water getting in again..

Worth a shot, and it's free to try.

Omg
How did that happen?
How old is belt? How many miles on belt?

Well done sticking with it and finding the problem , not easy tracking down something like that.

Jack

It's a safe engine so swap the belt (do water pump as well) and all will be fine.

strange

all the other ones ran for a few second skipped the stopped

this one "It starts and runs perfectly for about 30 seconds then peters out"

don't know how many teeth the panda sprocket has and cant be bothered to count but they are normally just over 50T

5 teeth = 10th or 36 degrees if my maths in my head is correct

Hi The cam belt was 6 months old and somehow the tensioner had moved. I cant take credit for tracking this fault down I had the Panda taken to MZDitaltec who are a Fiat specialist. Thanks to them all is good now.
