General 1.2 consuming too much fuel

General 1.2 consuming too much fuel

So i adjusted timing again, put new spark plugs, new thermostat valve, interchanged 02 sensors and checked brakes as well. After sparks plugs the consumption decreased, but still it is giving 8.5l/100 km (26.7 mpg )
What could be cause, i did compression test also, all cylinders are between 210psi to 220 psi , which means engine is ok.
I am fed up with this tiny 1.2 litre 60bhp engine which is consuming like 200 bhp

Hi,

Remove the valve cover.

Set engine to top dead centre cylinder 1.

Post photos of the camshaft lobes of number1 cylinder and number 4 cylinder.

and the mpg if you disconnect the MAP

What is your daily driving like, are you driving 10 miles down the road on every trip at a steady 80kph or are you sat in bumper to bumper traffic on the morning commute creeping a few metres at a time and burning a tank load of fuel while hardly moving ?

Did these problems exists from when you bought the car or are they something that has developed while you’ve owned it ?

Dont know, but engine starts vibrating, very rough idle,

should drive fine, my 1.1 and 12 do. Take it for a drive.

Need to know if the mpg goes up or down

and does the acceleration improve

We have to start eliminating possible problems. Otherwise we will be here for another three pages of suggestions. Unless you post some pictures of the live data from the sensors

City mix driving, even that should not give me 220 miles for a full tank of petrol. Acceleration feels underpowered if compared to other pandas, engine is also louder than other pandas. I had 3 pandas , thats why i can relate.

So it looks like you have gone over every possibility of what could or couldn’t be wrong with it before in this thread here https://www.fiatforum.com/panda/480880-10-5-litres-100-km-fuel-consumption-ok-6.html

You probably should have carried on that thread rather than starting a fresh because people are just suggesting the same stuff again....

If you’re getting 26 - 29 mpg on an older car driving in city driving short distances, which is what your other thread says then it could easily be there is nothing wrong with the car.

I bought car 4 months back, during covid19 lockdown, drove it home and next day i put new clutch plates, new water pump and timing belt , all new shock absorbers and front control arms with ball joints ends.

Today i ordered new 02 sensor as well in order to eliminate the doubt.

My wife does short runs (3 to 5 miles) but minimal traffic gets about 40 to 45 mpg (dont know what that is in L/100Km). I take it out for a fast drive every now and again.

A missfire (even barly perceptible) will increase fuel consumption. The ECU sees the unused oxygen and feed more fuel to compensate, often making the missfire worse. Weak coils and plug leads can be enough especially on wasted spark systems. Check the coil resistance values.

I have multimeter, i will check the leads, what should be normal readings for good wires .

45 mpg is excellent, mine is giving 27 mpg, or should i just put new coils, map sensor, leads.

Or you could post photos of the cam shaft lobes of cylinder1 and cylinder4 with crank set at 0 degrees tdc.
That will cost you nothing .

It is possible that the cam sprocket has been bolted to the cam shaft in the wrong position, that would mean the mark on the cam pulley not in the correct place any more. In turn that would mean cam timing incorrect.

I used to a VW Polo 1 litre. Easily the sh!ttest car I ever had. Absolutely cr@p on fuel. It never did idle property. I learnt afterwards not to pr@tt around with cars too much. I changed the head twice, carburettor, distributor etc.
But, it had been played around with before I brought it.
I should have got the basics checked the first time. As Jackwhoo says, absolutely confirm the engine basics like cam timing. My Panda never gives less then 45mpg.

are you sure you haven't got a fuel leak?
even a small one where the fuel evaporates will drop consumption significantly.
