Okay, thank you.
I’m sure when we first picked it up, my charger plugged into it without too much of a problem. I’ll buy a shorter one and see if that helps!
I suppose I should be grateful it has one at all!

Hi Gman

Its likely that if you have had the car idling warming up the oil it will reduce the economy figures dramatically. i was doing a brim to brim test but forgot when i disconnected the battery today to do our thermostat change and lost the data.

oopps

I haven’t had it idling for too long. I wonder if the garage did when they did the cambelt change on Thursday to check it’s running okay?
I’ll keep an eye on it.

The new aux belt I put on today squealed for a second or two when I cold started it just now. Could that be the tension? Wasn’t sure how tight to do the alternator bolts back up. Just did it until the belt was snug enough.

Just checked it after driving it, looks like it has slackened off a touch, or maybe the belt has just stretched a tad? Anyway, I’ll retighten the alternator bolts in the morning and hopefully that’ll sort it out

This months Car Mechanics magazine has a useful guide on flushing engines to remove the crud, might be worth a look.
I tighten my alt drive belt, if it is the rib type so that it can't be twisted more than about 45 deg. V belts need about 12mm of slack mid way between two pullies.

They would have it running long enough for heater hot, thermostat open, the rad hot and electric fan switching on and off.
So quite a while.

Can’t fathom this out...
As the car starts, the aux belt squeals for a second. I’ve tried tightening the alternator bolts, but don’t want to do them too tight. The belt doesn’t seem loose, seems similar to the old one, which did not squeal as far as I’m aware
Any ideas? Is it possible it is too tight?

No belt squeal when we first started it and it wasn’t warm then.

How tight do the bolts for the alternator need to be and do they have to be tightened in a certain order? I don’t want to overdo it

Think I have sorted it.
I loosened the 3 bolts off holding the alternator in and levered the alternator as far back as it would go whilst tightening the top bolt. This seemed to get the belt just a tad tighter. Enough to stop the squealing.

Persistence!

Hi Gman

I must admit i couldnt work out how tightening the alternator bolts would tighten the belt, further on you tightened the belt its self by loosening the bolts tensioning the belt then retightening. hence resulting in a tighter belt.

The end result is now good.

fab news

Seems to be fine now, even on a very cold start this morning!
The car seems to be running really well now, it is definitely being put to the test now with my partner's frequent commuting up and down the Moor's!
Very fond of it already.

thats how I do it. A length of wood helps. But don't over tighten the belt. Its a fine line between being tight enough to stop the squeak and not too tight to wear the alternator bearing. (y)

I'll keep an eye on the tension. It doesn't seem too tight to me. I didn't wedge the alternator back with anything, just my hand, so it won't be as far back as it could go

Last tank was 37.2mpg
That was mostly shorter trips, 9 miles each way, not really any stopping though. All steep uphill on the way back home each day.
Plus the car being sat idling whilst the cambelt was done.
I'll check next tank and hopefully it'll be back around 42+

Over the last week the 100HP has done four 180 mile road trips of fast A roads and motorway. Trip average says 42mpg which is 5 up on my usual average. Ive not done a brim to brim check as forgot to reset the trip mileage. Fuel was Tesco 99 or Shell Optimax.

Even this latest tank seems not that great so far. The fuel guage started to quickly move down a few chunks after 40 or so miles.
I'll be optimistic and do a brim to brim measurement when this tank is done.
As long as it's around 40, I'm happy as that's higher than any car I've had before for our commuting!!

Hi Gman

Tomorrow i will be topping up our 1.2 2005 dynamic, then starting again on a brim to brim test to check the computer is calculating correctly, ive just done about 40 miles since zeroed so i should be able to get some numbers.

Just for comparables.

do you remember what you used to get on your other cars, any chance of a short list to compare, ie car type and mpg

Tim

We have done 85 miles and the gauge shows one or two of the small chunks under a 3/4.
Our commute is hard on any car going back home as it is all uphill and requires the car to work quite hard for all 9 or so miles!

Hmm my 1.2's computer thinks I'm getting 52mpg over the last 1500 miles, but it did plummet when I visited my sister in the Lake District.

Romping up passes three-up involved a lot of right hoof in 2nd & 3rd gears at 3-4k revs, with inevitable results on fuel consumption.

I wonder whether the 1.3 MJ diesel would be better in this kind of terrain? I suspect with its greater torque it could drag itself up a hill at 2000 revs where the petrol wouldn't.

Any MJ owners able to comment please?

Small diesels used to be the work of the devil, but with a good power range, low CO2 and 60+mpg, I almost wish I'd considered an MJ for myself now:)
