Time to change the plugs so checked the NGK part finder which shows two options that appear to be of different size - 14 mm (7642) or 12 mm (4983). Can anyone advise the size required before I resort to taking one out to check please?

Car is a 2009 1.1 ECO.

Also any alternatives parts to stock that anyone has tried and would recommend?

Thanks,

I think all the post 2006 ish are 12mm

but don't take my word for it. Double check

the safest way would be to look up the number that's on the side of the pugs that are already in the car and cross refence it to find its thread size

Should be 12mm
If you type the car reg into www.eurocarparts.com it will give you a selection to choose from check your engine number against the spec

I think for the 1.1 models, you can tell by the shape of the oil filler.

Square oil filler - Euro 4 - 14mm plugs.
Round oil filler - Euro 5 - 12mm plugs.

My 2004 1.1 has the older Euro 4 motor with a square oil filler and 14mm plugs.

Have tried ECP but despite suggesting many differernt plugs from Bosch, Denso and NGK the tech details are lacking and contradictory - some are 12 and some 14 mm and the NGKs have no detail other that "OEM fitment".

Having a look at what is fitted is probably the only reliable to identify way I suppose....

That sound like an interesting idea! When I get around to having a look I will post back the result of a sample of one to see if the rule holds true!

Cheers,

Mine is a 10 reg and gives several options but look at the log book for engine number check it against the fitment tab

fitment tab
Engine number from 2533529
Fitted OE from factory 12mm plug

A better solution is to fit an equivalent Iridium plug.

NGK DCPR7EIX is a direct replacement for the DCPR7E-N-10 and well worth the additional cost. They'll be good for at least 60,000 miles. The OEM copper core plugs will be well past their best after 6,000.

This has been discussed in great detail in the 500 section if you're interested - the search function should find all the relevant posts. Or start here and follow the links.

I checked via engine number and catalogues list both 12 and 14 for all years?

no guarantee the catalogues are correct.

I would guess it a bit like the rear brakes can be Bendix or Bosch but 99.9% are Bosch

but you can't be sure 100% unless you inspect first. Although I took a flyer last time and ordered Bosch.

good idea to check the owners manual though. I not seen two fuse boxes the same but the diagram in the original manual with the car is correct (not the online)

Many times I have been saved by taking the original part with me to the motor factors and checking whats in the box before leaving.

Hi All

We have panda 1.2 petrol 2005 dynamic and it has 12mm plugs and square oil filler.

in your position i would probably remove plug 1(drivers side) and measure, it can be done without removing the air filter unlike the others.

Tim

Thanks for all the ideas.
1. Manual indicates they are 12 mm
2. Pulling No. 1 without having to remove the air box sounds like the way to go to check what's currently fitted (@timmycm850)
3. Recommendations for the Iridium upgrade was also a thought so might take that route, so thanks jrkitching

Cheers all....

Hi Brooking147

I've just ordered our 2005 panda 12mm some iridium plugs at £18.95 per set delivered less a 7% discount as I've ordered an O2 sensor from the same person too.

see error code 420 posting.

Tim,
That sounds like a good price for the plugs (even before the 7% discount), are they NGK? The prices I have been looking at are around £32 a set. Any chance you could share your source?
Cheers,

Hi Brooking

Its an Ebay item number 173985798300 made by purespark. Some come with a 3 year warranty too, not that i will have them in the car that long as i will probably change them every 2 years or about 12k at current use.

Hope that helps

Tim

I've not heard of that brand, and can't find much about them on the internet.

Iridium electrodes are very fragile. Since a tip breaking in service could destroy the engine, I personally wouldn't risk it to save perhaps £10 or so over an NGK branded plug.

You do not need to change quality Ir plugs after 12000 miles.

The NGK Iridiums (DCPR7EIX) are good for at least 60000 miles.

Finally got round to doing the plugs on my 2009 1.1 ECO.

So I pulled the plug nearest the belts and checked to find it was a 12 mm thread. Looks like original equipment NGK DCPR7E-N 10. On pulling the lead off this plug the crimp connector stayed on top of the plug, so looks like leads were shot so have replaced those too.

Much debate over which type plug to fit ensued but I went for a compromise between Iridium cost and ECP convenience. I have fitted a set of DENSO XU22TT so called Nickel Twin Tip. Probably only standard mileage life expectancy but though I would give them a try at about £16 a set.

With the new plugs and leads the little Panda is noticeably running sweet and smooth. I think the plugs were long overdue...

One question for knowledgeable members:

Where the airbox meets the top of the intake/ butterfly assembly there is a rubber sealing grommet. Mine was looking decidedly tired and loose. Can this part be obtained separately or does it only come with a new airbox assembly?

Thanks.......
