Hi Folks,

The rear windscreen wiper of my 100HP started working of its own accord today, even when the rear wiper was not switched on. The front wipers were on intermittent at the time.

I’be read elsewhere that this could be a bad earth? Has anyone experienced this issue and resolved it themselves?

Thanks.

Selecting reverse gear will operate the rear wiper when the front wipers are on. It's done via the reverse light switch. An earth fault in the rear lights could cause the ECU to see enough of a signal for it to switch the wiper on.

Hi Dave,

Yes, I realise the rear wiper comes on when in reverse and the front wipers are on. It’s not that. This happens when I am driving forward.

Anyway, I took a closer look today and realised my rear lights are now disco lights. When the lights are on, I indicate and both the rear light and the indicator flash.

I removed both rear light clusters and the bulbs were completely shot, falling apart etc. So, I replaced all bulbs with new ones. Cleaned up the bulb holders as best I could with sandpaper and contact cleaner.

I refitted just the bulb holders to test and unfortunately still disco lights on both sides.

What I did notice was when I wiggled the main wiring loom the problem went away. But, wiggle the loom again and the issue returns.

If I was looking for an earth fault, where specifically should I be looking?

I note there is a cable going from the boot to the underneath of the car but when I traced this it seemed to go into what I assume is the fuel tank.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Ive not (yet) done a Panda rear end earth fault, but it's possible the light unit frames provide the earth. You can prove it by removing a light unit and connecting metal to metal with the car chassis using a length of wire.

The issue with rear wiper working oddly - if the ECU sees power at the reversing light it will run the wiper. It wont know where that power came from. An earth fault back feeding will do the job fine.

Check the nsr connector block on the end of the loom. The bit that the lamp plugs in to. There is a recent thread for this in the Panda section.
