I've found the part it's supposed to be connected to the brake adjuster tried up put pics up but it won't accept it just getting messages from forum saying problem contact site
 
Cheers found ePER I've ordered the right parts renewing the drums and shoes on mrs car and hand brake cables will probably be back for advice on the self adjuster setups thanks for your help
 
I will be interested in this as well.

Have just put new shoes and hydraulic cylinders on the rear of my Panda.

The hand brake isn't very good at all.

Wonder if there is a particular way it should be setup that I haven't done.

Had a bit of a search around the net.
The so called automatic adjuster needs to be adjusted manually to put the shoes out to the drum as much as possible, even rubbing a tiny bit.
Makes sense, my drums went on easy so scope for improvement there.
Should get to it next weekend hopefully and will report back.

So, I have eventually gotten the rear brakes sorted and they passed our NCT without any issues.
As anyone who has been at them knows, there is an adjuster on the top to push out the shoes so the hydraulics has little travel to begin braking.
The image attached shows the ratchet mechanism for the "automatic" adjustment.
Some YouTube videos I found talk of adjusting that outward from fully in, but this didn't work for me as the springs pulling them in are too strong.
What did work was to adjust the knurled wheel out too far so the drum won't fit over, when assembling the whole thing in the first place.
Then adjust the wheel in until the drum just fits over, this is much easier.
The "finger" which holds the wheel needs to be disengaged to allow the wheel to rotate.

wind in the adjusters. Put on the drums.

keep lifting the handbrake and pumping the brake

adjust the handbrake so its just off with the handbrake full down.

lift the handbrake two notches test both sides are the same amount of drag.

either job done. Or something isn't right.


the point of them being self adjusting is err, they self adjust.
 
I see you left the hub on. Its so much easier if you remove it.


the shoes, adjusters and spring can be assembled on the bench. If there new shoes the adjust will have to be wound all the way in.


then attach the handbrake cable. This is much easier if you loosen the adjuster nut at the back of the handbrake lever.


Its now better to fasten one shoe to the back plate. Doesn't matter which one.

finally its just a matter of slipping the bottom of the other shoe in place. I use a very large flat blade to lever it in place and finally fasten to the back plate.


its important to do a visual check. Make sure the adjuster is resting ABOVE the little pip. The two springs short and long either side the adjuster should be tight and parallel to the adjuster. Finally the adjuster is still located in its location notch.
 
Ya, I had left the hub on but was also changing the hydraulic cylinder as well so put that on after which did help.
As you, I assumed by pumping the pedal and pulling the handbrake that the "automatic" system would ratchet out to touch the drum. That didn't happen, even with the drum off and getting the son to do the pumping no ratcheting occurred.
So adjusting them to meet the drum manually worked fine to have good brakes & handbrake and pass the NCT (MOT in Eire).
As the rear shoes wear very little, they will have a lot of opportunity over the next few years to adjust out a notch or two.
 
I wouldn't be happy if they didn't ratchet out on there own.

I would have to find out why.

What I would consider to be a simple job is quite easy to mess up.

I had finished mine and was happy until a visual inspection spotted one of the adjusters had slipped past its location pip.

I normally wash the brake dust off the adjusters in petrol before refitting them.
