The engine warning light came on yesterday. No indication of over heating or lack of oil. What could be the reason? May have imagined it but the car was a bit smelly (fumes) for the last week. May be unconnected.

Hi.

Do you mean the RED temperature light?

Or the Yellow engine control light??

Best to :

1 check all fluids

2 plug in a Fault Code reader

It's the yellow engine symbol. I don't have a fault code reader. I've checked the levels of oil and water and they are OK.

I really don't think the EML (Engine Management Light) tells you something about coolant or oillevel. It tells you something about the efficiency of the fuelratio (1 Kg fuel on 14,7 Kg air = Lambda).
So probably something is messing with the mixture. Might be an airleak, a nonfunctioning sparkplug, Mapsensor, Lambdasensor and maybe 100 other things. Hence the need to read the codes stored in the On Board Diagnostics system (OBD2).

All good advice here. If the engine light is lit there's almost certainly a code, or codes, stored. Cheap code readers are Ok-ish but can give a confusing outcome, much better with a quality tool like Fiat's own diagnistic kit or the Multiecuscan kit which many of us Forum members use. So here's an oft asked question - Whereabouts are you? Because there may be a forum member with MES near you who could read the codes for you.

If you're anywhere near Wantage I can help - just bought a panda but long time fiat owner, and I've got an OBD2 reader.

Mine came on at the weekend - read the code and fairly confident it was a loose coolant sensor connector but waiting for it to resurface.

MK1 fiat Punto, silver, with an aluminium rear window rivetted into place - quite distinctive! Was in Didcot from 2012 to 2015.

MES free version is - erm - free but you'll need to buy the connector leads. Paid-for (registered) version at £50 is about the same as getting one code reading session at a garage.
