My 2007 1.3 multijet has done 73k. There is a rattle, more noticeable when cold which sounds 'chain' like, and I've been advised by a mechanic it's most likely timing chain tensioner. I have read that it's a fairly common problem with these, mine has had regular oil changes and been looked after. It sounds as though parts are expensive and labour also. Any thoughts on where to go to get it done, or where to get decent parts appreciated. Thanks.

I had this engine in my diesel hack/ daily driver. 150000mls on the clock with the same chain up until it was written off last year by a numpty not paying attention. These engines with the chain like clean oil. I changed the oil & filter every six months without fail. Mine had been getting a wee bit rattly, & for some time I was toying with having the chain done, but the decision was already made up for me. Looking back the wee van was just going to be driven into the ground if I'm honest.

I've heard varying stories of high mileage going on for ever & lower mileage going pop. Not exactly a cheap job if you can't do it yourself. If your planning to keep your car, well the decision is up to you.
 
My MJ's passed 150K and still silent as well :)
At about 120K it developed a rattle which I immediately thought was timing chain. (p.s. 40yrs experience, so I've heard most noises)

Long story short - it was the water pump!! No leaks or obvious play, new pump and all is still well. So before you dismantle the engine, take the auxillary belt off and see if it still rattles......
 
Good plan re remove aux belt and see if it still rattles.

As above, check the water pump. Mine started rattling which I thought might be the chain, but it was the water pump.

My chain is absolutely quiet, 96k miles, oil change every 6 months/3k miles since new.
