When I started up my car yesterday & drove off it took at least 8 miles for the car temperature gauge to reach normal temp. I know it was cold yesterday, did anyone else have the same "trouble"?

With it -3c here this morning my petrol dualogic was up to normal temperature in under 4 miles. More important in the comfort factor stakes is how quickly warmth comes out of the heater and the Panda is not too bad in that respect.

That sounds very reasonable to me, especially in this weather. In general Diesels take longer to warm up than petrols, and also the bigger the engine is the longer it takes.

From what I've read, the average warmup distance for an average engine, on an average day is around 7 miles, so 8 miles isn't bad for a diesel on a very cold day.

Diesels, due to them being more efficient, produce less heat than petrol engines. In the current weather, depending on your driving, 8 miles is not uncommon. My JTD used to take ages.

The A2 has an auxilliary heater, until the engine is warm, which uses diesel fuel to heat the cabin when the outside temperature is below 5 degrees C. Therefore it doesn't take the much needed heat from the engine but within a couple of miles I am nice and toasty. Yum, yum...

I considered buying a Mazda for the pre-heat feature...

Instead I park as close to the house as possible to shield the car from frost... It works too...(y) Bought de-icer yesterday though as the work car park can get very icy...

By the way, the wee needle on the temperature guage reached that happy mid-way point only 4.8 miles from home this morning...

Never really checked my multijet temp guage but I think it is up to the middle in about 4 to 5 miles, will have a look on Monday on the way to work, I usually leave the house about 6.50 a.m. and it has been plenty cold these last few mornings.

My wife's 'other' car, the Alhambra 130 diesel, gets to the middle of the guage in about 2 - 3 miles, could be a different set up ? Don't really know.

Is the middle the normal running temperature?

Yes, the middle of the guage on the Alhambra seems to be where it sits - thankfully never goes above this.

The multijet seems to pull well enough even when the guage is still sitting at the cold end - like any other diesel, you can't accelerate too hard until it warms up a bit, but that would only damage the engine until the oil fully circulates anyway.
