key chip

I only have one key for my panda, 2004 petrol 4x4. I got a key cut which opens doors and switches on the dash display. My idea was to take the chip out of the original key and stick it near the ignition barrel, then be able to use either key. But it won't work for some reason, it still works as normal with the chip back in the old key. Question is does anyone know where the pick up point is on the barrel ?

Re: key chip

Directly behind the plastic, around the barrel. Doesn't the RFID chip need some sort of power?

Re: key chip

Why not get a new key made from a reputable locks specialist?

Re: key chip

Thanks for the replies. Not thought that the chip might need power, it looks like the usual bit of sintered powder. I've done this before on other cars and worked well. I don't have any car locksmiths anywhere near here and can't do without the car while the post office does its job, and it costs a small fortune.

Re: key chip

A local guy did my Renault key card for 60 and diagnosed the car's card reader was faulty. He does Fiat keys less cost. The chip is similar to a payment card chip or an animal ID chip. It has no internal power supply.

You say the car runs fine with the chip in the key, so maybe you problem is the ring antenna that sits around the ignition lock.

This is from Italy so silly postage but it looks basically the same from a Punto 188 though to a current Fiat 500. Call Shop4Parts and see what they can offer. It's an antenna only - no chips - no coding - its just the reader.

Re: key chip

Dave McT- that looks the thing, had not realised it is so close to the key. Maybe I had not got the chip close enough ! Maybe the pick-up is damaged, will try again soon.

Re: key chip

Hello All,
I got a key cloned just last week with a Philips Crypto 2 ID46 transponder chip , it was for a 2007 (red badge) 1.1 Panda.
I called into a Timpsons branch near work and was quoted 70 , called into another different branch on the same day, nearer home, and they quoted me 35.
How does that work?
Anyway , I thought yes please, I will have one of those.

Chatted away to the chap as he doing the job and when I got to the till to pay for the key, he said he would only charge me 30!
Result.

Re: key chip

A professional locksmith has to comply with all sorts of insurance and legal rules, hence the costs. But at least they won't be popping over a few days later to "borrow" your car.
