I looked at buying a 2005 Panda automatic today. (70 000 miles)

It has the following issues.

It became late at the gear change in fully automatic mode, but was still fine in semi automatic mode. Then it just got stuck in gear 1, and of course will not start now.

I did a diagnostic on it today. It was showing P1221, throttle body stuck, or something similar. It also showed another code to do with an anti theft device not working. It showed nothing on the gearbox, even when scanned separately.

The dashboard shows a 1 is selected when the ignition is on. I cleared the codes, but this made no difference, it is still saying gear 1, and will not start.

I am not a mechanic, and certainly know little about auto’s, but I am looking for some help or ideas about the issue, as I would like to buy the vehicle.

Thank you in advance.

Don't buy it.

Just walk away.

A 12yr old Panda dualogic with a transmission fault is worth only scrap value; perhaps £100 or so. Repairing the transmission would almost certainly cost far more than the car would ever be worth.

If you're still tempted, read this thread.

As jrkitching says, the smart move is to run in the opposite direction, keeping your wallet firmly in your pocket.

If you
a) ignore his advice,
b) you can buy it for pennies,
c) you have time and mechanical skills, and
d) really want to gamble on it anyway
you will need MultiECUScan to diagnose it and perform setup.

What you find may range from trivial (faulty brake switch or loom problem, clutch worn), up through expensive but fixable (failed pump motor and accumulator), all the way to expensive but still not working reliably (swapping or repairing the unit, only to find the gearbox is also knackered).

If the actuator leaks at all I would also strongly suggest moving on.

:yeahthat:

Could be anything from the pump, to the accumilator, or worse.

Perhaps it might be better to clear this up.

Don't just run away from this particular Dualogic, but run away from all of them!

In terms of reliability, they haven't been a massive success, they get more posts across all models on this forum, even new ones tend to end up back at the dealers soon enough for major work.

I've a similar gearbox set up on a Citroen, EG6 or ETG6 or some other odd acronym.
I didn't actually buy it, more like inherited it, but it's already facing the scrap yard in case it goes wrong and needs pushing there.

It terms of usage, you might as well hire a gorilla to change gear for you, I'm positive they would be far smoother!
