Not easy, unless you're a double jointed monkey.

You can reach the electrical part from the top rear right of the engine (looking into the engine bay from the front of the car), but to remove it entirely you'll need to work from underneath, and have long fingers, good tools, a well developed vocabulary and patience.

And if you think that's difficult, try accessing the common rail on a Berlingo 1.6hdi. I know it's not a Fiat, but I've got one and that's my next task! Grrr!
 
Hiya,Mines stuck open & belching smoke when cold,rough running & using a lot of fuel.Too cold to work on it right now will use it sparingly till we get a break in the weather then maybe i'll have a go.cheers.
 
I'll just sit back here and wait for you to tell us how to do the job first Silverado if you don't mind. Mines smelly and smoky when cold but powering ok though. Smelly in cab when moving. Using fuel yes but watching the sump oil level as well.

Hiya,Couldn't wait for break in weather black smoke annoying neighbours.Had a friend fit a reducer plate on EGR valve as a temporary fix.Black smoke problem fixed & fuel economy a little better.cheers
 
Silverado has a fault code appeared since you blanked off the EGR as to the emissions as on some cars it doesn't show up. Some times you've got to drill a small hole in the blank plate to con it.
 
OP says a reducer plate has been fitted. I think they mean restrictor plate, so already done. They just need to clean or replace the EGR when weather is better and they should be OK. I fitted a restrictor plate to my 1.9JTD Croma over two years ago and no issues since. Others on here should know better than to suggest modifictions that make the car illegal and can invalidate insurance.

Old thread.. but need some EGR help: advice.

Weve got a 2007 my ( in a GP.. non DPF)

MINOR fumey whiff on cold start.. not obviously smokey.. oil level seems to hold fine ( owned for 10 months.. 3K Miles
Oil level still at top of dipstick flats)

We did a 2 hour 100+ mile motorway run last weekend.. MEGA fumey.. clothes stunk of fumes :(

So.. if I unbolt the electrical connector at its flange.. will I get access to any sooty stuff.

Major work isnt possible currently.. but can spend a few minutes investigating.

It's all in the smoke/smell.

EGR problems tend to lead to stutters, hesitation, bad mpg and black, sooty smoke when accelerating/decelerating (the failed egr is starving the engine of air so it runs really rich).
It tends to smell like rich burnt soot rather than acrid or oily.

Plain oily or raw diesely fumes tend to be leaks under the bonnet, you don't really get a different exhaust with these unless the fuel leak is unbalancing the fuel air ratio.

Blueish exhaust smoke and burnt oily smell is engine oil burning in the engine.

A stinging acrid smell and what sometimes looks like white smoke or steam at the exhaust is unburnt fuel passing through the engine.

This is particularly common at cold startup when compression is a little lower due to either a bit of engine wear or low crank speed or a dodgy heater plug/s.

If it's present all the time, this can point to injector issues or the cetane rating is poor and slow to ignite (though that's pretty uncommon these days).
 
Pretty sure its JUST a sooty stink..

Only running issue.. it runs cooler than anticipated.

So..

How big a job is EGR removal?

Prepared to have a go.. but have to be realistic..

Not sure if long drives with goo in the fuel is going to do the job..?
Easily a few hours for somebody at home on the driveway working from underneath the car.
One of the most annoying problems is that you can see the bolts the mount the valve to the car so you're working blind and I'd your changing the valve you need to drain the coolant due to the egr cooler
 
Only running issue.. it runs cooler than anticipated.

Unburnt fuel doesn't create heat, though starving the engine of air and running rich (open EGR) has the same effect

There's also the possibility the oil cooler attached to the underside of the oil filter housing is leaking, it's quite common on the 1.3 MJ for the insides of the cooler to breakdown.

Diesels tend to blow out into the coolant rather leak coolant back, so carefully check the coolant for oil and bubbles when running, the stink might be hot coolant/oil/blowby escaping via the coolant system.

Would be worse when cold.. and passed emissions test ok.

But overfuelling is a possibilty.


Fairly sure the basic mechanicals are ok.. and no noticable smoke.


Half tempted to:

Blank off radiator

Bypass EGR coolant

Use fual additive .. and drive HARD


ONLY ISSUE: killing myself with the fumes before it is clear..


Repeat question: if I unbolt the flange on top of EGR( electrical sensor)

Will I get a peek at the soot levels?
 
It's not a big deal to change. You need a 10mm socket and extension. Remove the coil packs for access and there's the thermostat held by two 10mm head bolts. I removed the ECU for easier access but even that was just more10mm bolts. Hoses are fine but you will need suitable worm drive clips.

Running the car with stuck thermostat costs petrol, is bad for the engine and the exhaust catalyst.
 
Ain't no coil packs on a diesel.
You can see the egr mechanism if you remove the top part - working from above, not underneath - but to clean out the egr is a bigger job, because the whole thing has to be removed.
Not convinced that your problem is egr-related. Sounds more like a leak of fumes into the cabin because of an underbonnet leak.

When was your's last serviced? Does the car still perform well, or has there been a performance drop-off? The turbo hoses go flabby with age and can split. Worth checking them.
