Hi All,
I cleaned my throttle body today after I noticed the idling was a bit off. Took some pics, so I though I would share the process.
Here are the materials/tools I used:
First, we start with the open bonnet:
Unfasten the clip on the bottom of the filter box, unscrew both bolts that hold it down and lift it off. It should look like this:
Here's a closeup of the throttle body:
It looks a bit gunky.
Disconnect the electrical connections:
Take the clip off of the throttle cable pipe (not sure if that's what it's called):
Remove the throttle cable from the throttle body:
Remove the three torx bolts that fasten the throttle body to the intake manifold:
Lift off the throttle body:
Here's the back:
Use the brake cleaner (or ideally carb cleaner) to get the greasy gunk off of the throttle body. I don't have any pictures of this because by that point, things got a bit messy. The main thing to clean is the choke valve, and the idling valve:
In my case, when I sprayed the brake cleaner through the idling valve, loads of gunk came out. There was also that layer of gunk on the choke valve itself.
Once you're done cleaning it, oil the choke valve shaft with some gear oil. Maybe also oil the spring a bit, without it getting too messy. I also added a bit of silicone grease to the cable track:
Repeat the steps above in reverse to get the throttle body back on:

Here are the materials/tools I used:
- Multi-bit screwdriver set, with a 3mm torx bit and a 10mm hex socket
- Brake cleaner
- Kitchen rags
- A light machine oil. I have a 3 in 1 oil, but I'm sure any mineral oil will do.
