hi i am going to do my back axle just a quick question need to remove the springs do i have to have both wheels off the floor at the same time to get one spring out thanks
Much safer to support the beam, disconnect both shocks and drop the beam releasing both springs together.
Removing one side at a time requires the beam to twist. The release of the spring may put some side forces on it, increasing the risk of it escaping. If it pops out with any force, it is very dangerous. This job is best done with help.
The main advantage of a twist beam is that it's cheap (unless yours has just rusted out and you're trying to buy a replacement ), which is why they're commonly used on small FWD cars.
Chock the front wheels with car in gear.
Loosen rear wheel bolts.
Jack the car with trolley jack under centre of rear beam.
Position axle stands under the rear wheel change jacking points. If your stands have turned up edges you will need some 2" x 1" wood to spread the load against the inner sill.
Lower the jack.
Remove rear wheels.
Undo the shock absorber bottom bolts and the axle will drop down nicely.
Remove springs.
Clean axle and treat with Waxoyl or whatever you prefer.
If you remove the shock absorber's top bolts be very careful refitting. They have a self cleaning front end and can easily get cross threaded. Alway remove these last and fit first.
