Another years motoring in front of me, 10 year old and still going
Mind you had to replace the front springs (advisory from 2 years ago), so thought I would do the front shocks as well, and noticed the rear drums were well flaky with rust when I had the tyres swapped
Regular maintenance, thats all it needs

2008 Cross, 145 000 miles. FSH every 20 000 kms.

Bought in Geneva, lived on the lake of Geneva. Driven to Barcelona, twice, Venice, Torino, Croatia, Nice, Lake Como, Milan, Paris, Lyon, Monte Carlo, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Lichtenstein, Ascona, Avignon, Montpelier, Zurich, Basel, St. Moritz, Basel, Mulhouse, Friedrichshafen, and lots and lots of shorter weekend travel to weird and obscure places in Switzerland, France and Italy and then from there all the way to England! :D This car has become our friend and companion. :)

It was not entirely trouble-free. Never broken down on these long trips, but went through a bad experience with diesel injectors. Seems like a unique experience, and the Swiss aint shy to charge for parts and labour. Front wishbones replaced after the bushes were worn, and a few smaller things, but nothing serious or unexpected. But the injectors experience was terrible.

The funny thing is that it has become more reliable as it is getting older. The paint-job of the Goa Orange is just as new. The one thing I have done that has really changed my car for the better is to have changed exclusively to Shell V-Power Diesel. No other brand in the car for 6 the last months now, that stuff is amazing.

11 years old and still going strong

no faults passed with clean bill of health

looks like i might have to keep it !!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

All these passes, that's great news.

Just back from getting Fugly 2008 Cross MOT'd at 79,000 miles. A nice pass with no advisories either. :)

Blu's MOT is due shortly (2006 Active, 42,000 miles) which should pass without issue.

Well done on Fugly

Fingers crossed for Blu

Two more passes

2006 1.1 nearly 200 000 on the clock
Wing mirror repair not that they are on the wing any more (smashed)
Front strut
Handbrake adjustment
Water in head light
Indicator bulbs.
Exhaust (pain in the neck. Been welded to the CAT)

2005 1.2
Two tyres

Another pass here for my 2007 plate! Well, I got them to MOT mine just before I bought it in April as it was due in June. Two advisories- the exhaust I think, and something to do with an indicator needed re-painting or replaced.

Stupid bulbs. Two cars need 7 indicators bulbs. If you include advisory

Wilkinson sell Ring ones in packs of two. Not the cheapest but at least they should last more than year from the pound shop ones.

??
blown .. or faded orange..??

Showing white. Paints all crinkled. I was surprised they didn't fail them all as the difference between the new and old is vast.

At least it made me clean behind the rear lamp holders surprising how much mud had accumulated behind there.

And yet another year, another MOT

No advisories but I will be doing some maintenance this year

Painting the wiper arms at the bottom where the paint has come off
Tidying the drivers door where it has scraped againts the wall on the edge
Changing the front indicator bulbs, the paint is cracking a bit (still passed tho)
Paint the rear of the rear seat back as its quite scratched
Might get round to putting a 12v accessory socket in for my dash cam

Most of it is cosmetic but it still looks good at 12 years old and I cant see any reason to get rid of it yet

Done the dvr wiring, done a bit of visual research for any other switched wiring as well
While looking underneath noticed some rust coming round the spare wheelnwhell and on the rear axle, time to scrub down and paint i think

Remove the rear shock's bottom bolts then you can droop the axle for better access for cleaning and rustproofing.

If you take the shocks off the car, refit them at the top mounts first. Otherwise it's all too easy to cross-thread the bolts, which have self-cleaning threads. DAMHIK ;(

I don't have the facilities to do that
Basically I will treat what I can reach, brush, treat, prime, paint. that's all its getting

If you're not going to drop the rear beam, then treat it with a penetrating rustproofer such as waxoyl or (better) one of the dinitrol products. It's best done in warm weather when the underbody is completely dry, so now would be a very good time.

Even used engine oil is better than nothing. If you rub some over the sump each time you change it, the sump will likely last the life of the car.

Paint alone won't provide sufficient protection against corrosion (which is why these parts rust in the first place).

When you're dealing with underbody components, corrosion protection is more important than appearance.

What facilities do you expect to need?

Jack up the car and support on axle stands at the sills jacking points. Use timer battens so the sill flange is not crushed.

Remove two bolts holding the shock absorbers (one each side) and the axle drops down.

You now have good access for brake hoses and rust proofing. As JR says paint is a waste of effort. (1) you will never adequately remove the rust so it will continue to corrode and (2) it's loads more work than a good scraping and squirt with XCP and Waxoyl.

Alternatively, do nothing and scrap the car in a short time when axle rust fails the MOT or a road spring falls off.
