Found my fuel leak... the high pressure fuel pump

Seems to be weeping from the lower plate.

Going to price up the parts (Recon pump and pump to fuel rail pipe)

Also need some tools - 14 and 17mm crow foot, long slim shank T30 thorx drive - the ones I have fouls the pump.

Not sure if it's going to be so pricy I throw the towel in on my Panda

Sorry to hear that . Just back from NCT ( National Car Test - Irish MOT) and delighted to pass .Was expecting to fail on wishbone bush/es and rear handbrake imbalance like last two years .Was willing to throw in the towel on car but now on the road for another year at 166k miles .
They save so much money in fuel even compared with a small petrol ploughing a few hundred a year into repairs can make sense .
It I had to replace a fuel pump in a diesel 2003 Micra at €1000 and know how much it can taint ownership .Is the pump near fuel filter ? The filter housing leaks easily if seal and torque isn't spot on .Worth a look?

Glad you passed your NCT :D Don't think my Panda is worth 1K all together ;)

The filter is on the other side of the engine bay but thanks for the idea.

Have had an inspection mirror under the pump (think large dentist mirror) and can see the liquid colecting on the bottom. It is dry at the top and nothing else in the vicinity really. the leakey stuff smells of diesle.

Can see a big wet patch underneath where it's dripped down the thermostat outlet, and all over the bell housing.

My MOT is due beginning of march. Think I'll price up the parts Monday and ask the tester if it's worth bring it in as is to get an idea if it will fail on owt else.

Looks a relitivley easy job compared to say the thermostat :)

I guess you have to do the sums but if it were me I'd try keep it . It's like a money making / saving machine .

My high pressure fuel pump went on mine. I was quoted around £600 for a reconditioned one. I opted for one from a scrap car for £100. It's holding up fine and I have the old one if I need to get it fixed again as I have found a place which fixes them.

I believe the pump cover is prone to leaking and seal kits are available

Thing is, is it the seal that's broken/split or has the pump body warped?
I believe both are possible.

You might find help on some of the Corsa forums as the 1.3 Multijet was used by Vauxhall/Opel in the Corsa, and there are plenty of "yoofs" that diy repair Corsa 1.3CDTi's!

If you are going to remove the cover, be careful as there is a spring behind it holding some parts in place.

Thanks - I read your thread last night from when yours went :)

Prices seem to have changes some what or were you going through FIAT?

Can get a recon / excahnge from from euro car parts - they have 2 listed - £220 next day or £145 5 - 7 days

Going to try my local motor factors as they are often cheaper than euro car parts.

Price for a used second hand one vs a reconditioned exchange seems quite close.

Thanks for this suggestion. I also saw it on Wee Smurf's thread. I don't really want to open a high pressure pump. up to 600 bar and can cut through skin. I don't fancy diesel in by blood.

Yes I did go to Fiat. But then again it was after noon on a Saturday a few weeks before Christmas. Dez likes to give me little Christmas presents like that! Weekends tend to be busy for me and I realized that there was quite a fuel leak when I came out of the zoo which is just a couple of miles from the dealer. They just told me that the leak was too bad to proceed and gave me a loan car there and then. It kept me going. I was in and out again in half an hour. :) The secondhand fuel pump is still running fine. It could have been much worse.

Perhaps I shouldn't talk about leaks! Just noticed as I brought the bin in through the garage some tiny oil spots on the floor. There's a leak around the sump somewhere. I've booked in for a check and service next Wednesday. Dez was due a service anyhow. He's done 10K miles since May last year. Now at almost 110K miles.

Passed NCT yesterday and may have 166,666 miles on clock at some point
Tommorow .Not especially superstitious but will be happy to see 166,667 !

Got the parts ordered - recon/exchange Pump and a new Pump to fuel rail pipe.

Ordered a set of crowfoot - pipe spanners are no good for torquing up the new pipe which will be under a lot of pressure so don't want any guess work.

Also a T30 75mm shank torx bit as the T30 I have will foul the pump when removing the top bolt.

Think I'll need to order a vac pump seal too.

Had to put this off for a week as the kids were off school and the Mrs didn't want to be car less.

Bit the bullet last nght after work. Job was relitivley streight forwards.

Just one cockup = took the cover off the vac pump instead of removing it and the insides fell out . got it back together though.

Got a bit of dirt on the Pump supply line when it split from the pump so I run a little fuel off through the line before connecting it to the new pump... ECM back on, ignition key turned and tapped the battery back on to buzz a bit through... Don't want any dirt in the recon pump or injectors.

I somehow ended up with a pack of 10 vac pump to cylinder head gaskets - so have 9 spare :)

Seems OK - done 40 miles today.
