My car stopped today on the road... as I accelerated it slowed down and eventually died out. It wouldn't start, but I could hear it desperately trying to...

Phoned insurance, they got RAC out. The guy reckons its a fuel pump. Every time he punched / hit it and I started the car it would start, but as soon as he stopped hitting it it slowly or suddenly died out.

He towed me to my mechanic, who saw and agreed it's a fuel pump issue.

Thank God. I was scared this was a big 'end of life' problem initially.

He told me, get a new pump online and we'll fit it and that'll solve the problem. Don't bother with a second hand one as you're paying for the labour and want a new one to last.

Anyone know where I can get one and must it be genuine? Someone else on here who had a similar problem in the past said Fiat quoted £300?! I was hoping maybe £60.

I don't mind going for a reputable part from Bosch or the likes online? Not sure if it's a single 'fuel pump' or what other parts I'll need, but all I was told was: new fuel pump.

Really appreciate any input on this, thanks in advance.

simple enough to fit a used one.., ;)
personally I wouldn't spend £200 @ labour on something that simple,
its 1 x electrical plug and 1 x hose connector..!!

EDIT - unplug the electrics yourself,
it under the back seat - then you'll have done 50% of the job yourself

The petrol fuel pump must be somewhat cheaper than the diesel high pressure fuel pump. I was quoted £460 for a reconditioned one when mine went last year. I opted to go for a secondhand one I sourced myself. I got that one for £120.

Or is it the fuel tank one?

Hi guys, I'm a little weary of getting a second hand one which could go wrong like my one did with it being a brave age.

Tell me this, is the pump inside the fuel tank? They told me if it's not it's like a 15 minute job but if it is it's a massive strip down to get under the seats and get into it?

And could anyone give me a link to a listing for the correct part if possible? I'm finding a good few variations of parts that are compatible but unsure as to what I need exactly. Other than this, I only can phone the mechanic on Monday to check this with him but of course I trust other owners too :)

As an aside (not wishing to bump in on a thread), I have a query.

My car seems to be turning into an old man. I've noticed several times when I've been walking through the garage that it makes burping noises from the fuel tank. Is this just some way of getting rid of trapped wind from a build-up in the tank or is it a sign that my tank fuel pump is malfunctioning? Mine is a Multijet btw.

Do you mean in the service station when refuelling ?I wouldn't worry about that .If making random noises in your own garage I'd be a bit curious .Give Car a shake / shove from side to side with fuel cap open?

My 2007 MJ also farts, especially in the summer.
It won't happen on petrols as they have systems to absorb the fumes.
On diesels the cap will hold a certain low pressure, but once this is exceeded it will let air out, or in, hence the fart.
It normally happens when I walk past the fuel cap, who would believe me if I said it was the car !

Just Ordered a new fuel pump...

http://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/bosch-7014235.html

Ordered Bosch for their seeming OE quality and high level parts / guarantee's etc. I feel confident in Bosch as if it was an original part.

This part is the full fuel pump - but if you know more than me and it's NOT, Please tell me RIGHT AWAY so I can get it returned!!! Hope it's the right part. So is this right part?

Stung me £140 :( Probably won't get it for ages now.

Anyone know how the mechanic accesses this part? Is it through the back bench seat being removed? Simple enough? Don't want to get a high labour bill for having to spend so much time for the man to fit it, but if it's hard to fit, I'd like to be prepared to pay a lot..

Oh good it's not just me then excusing my car when it farts in front of my friends then! :D The flatulence continues in the winter in mine!

On the bright side it's not smelly like my dad's dog. I had to make excuses and quickly leave his house today after it let rip! :ROFLMAO:

I believe the seat would need to come out to get to the cover but the seat is easy to remove. It just bolts in.

Glad to hear this. He was asking me if the seat went back or up and I said my model doesn't have the sliding seat and as far as I'm aware it won't come up - this was to the RAC man.

The mechanic said himself it'll either be 15 minute job or if it's some alternative system could be much longer.

Think if it's under the seat and screws out it's the 15 minute option he mentioned?! HEre's for hoping anyway.

Anyone know how long it takes parts from those sites to arrive or is it gonna take weeks now with Xmas in progress?

That's a big bill for a straightforward jobbie!
These pumps are available for around £70, and fitting should take no longer than two hours if things go right.
If you don't need the car every day, it might be a good idea to remove the old pump and have an electrician test it before buying another one. May even be repairable.
Er ... don't smoke while you're doing it!
Just my two penn'orth.

Just got the call. Going to cost over £100 at best. Possibly £150 if things won't budge easily :-(

On top of £140 I got the part form:-(

You can't compare what itd cost you to do and what it costs a garage to do. If you want to save money with these things you have to get the spanners out. I'm sure £100+ is going to sting but there's big overheads for a garage. I don't think it's too far from what i'd expect really.

Best of luck and hope your pandas back to full health very soon.:)

Positive Follow Up...

So after being told by my mechanic it will cost £100 in labour, at least, (if everything comes off the way it should..) I quickly asked on a few Fiat / Panda groups on the forum and Facebook and quickly came to the conclusion that the Fiat Panda 2003-12 fuel pump can be removed WITHOUT dropping the fuel tank and takes less than an hour.

How do I know? Because one of the calls I made was to my local Fiat dealership, who told me they'd fit my own part for £35 and confirmed that in fact you only need to remove the rear bench seat and there's a little drop down hole for it - the whole unit slips in and out. All wiring / fuel lines on the top of it. I was incorrectly informed there was wiring underneath of this, but I trust Fiat's opinion as the official makers of the thing!!!

So if you're reading this beyond the date it's posted with your own Fuel Pump fault, my advice: Go online, get a new Bosch or VDO unit with warranty, mine was £140. Get Fiat to fit it costing 1 hours labour. Or your local mechanic, don't let them charge you for hours of work, but just one! Fiat sells a new one for £335 so a good Bosch one is a bargain at around £110 - £140.

Total cost for me: £175 to fix incl. fitting.

But I just have to wait until the new year now for fitting!

thanks for all your help on the matter, I appreciate it and it encouraged me to ask questions to find this cheaper, more sound solution.
