I was getting the Panda serviced today (12,000 miles - cost £98) and asked the parts guy about a locking petrol cap.

He had the correct one (for a Panda petrol) in stock. The part number is 71802520 and it cost £14.63 inc VAT.

This cap is identical to the non locking cap, except that in the centre is the lock barrel, and it comes with two blue keys (not dissimilar to those that go in the ignition).

Hope this is of use.

PS. That was the good news. The bad news, was they had never heard of the problem of loud banging from the exhaust when driving through a puddle, couldn't reproduce it (the sun was shining) but they did warm up the exhaust, unbolt it, leave it to cool, and have then refitted it. Let's see .....

When you say that the two blue keys are not dissimilar to those that go in the ignition, are the sides of the keys flat like the ignition key, or are they serrated?

I bought the diesel version of the cap with a view to getting the pins on the lock changed so that it would match the ignition and I wouldn't have to carry an extra key, but the key for the fuel cap has a serrated edge, not like the flat edge on my ignition key...

Wish it was possible to buy one barrel and not a whole set... A whole set costs over £100.

Is it possibile to buy a Panda with a locking fuel cap? I may be considering buying a Panda soon, but would definately want a locking fuel cap. I have a Seicento at the moment, and it has a locking fuel cap.

mrs t's eleganza came with one as standard

I collected my new Panda at the weekend - 54 reg 1.2 Dynamic Air Con in bright green. Checked it out and no locking cap. Can't believe it really.
Phoned the main dealer today and he said they all have an anti-syphoning device to stop people stealing petrol so no need for locking cap!
I prefer to have one for safety and security. Some fool may drop anything into the tank and ruin the engine.
Going tomorrow to buy one, around £14 from dealer.
Annoying though as will have another large blue key to carry around.
Apart from that brilliant little car. Drives so much better than my Punto 2001 model. Soaks up the bumps around the country lanes near where I live.

Anti Siphoning device? Well, if you can get a bloody great fuel nozel in there sending petrol one way, I doubt if it's a problem to do it in reverse....

Yes, my locking cap key is serrated.

My thoughts exactly...

But I would be more concerned with someone dropping something in... Like petrol into the diesel, or a match, or something else...

Looks like I'll be scanning the local scrapyard for Fiats, to try to get the right type of lock barrel, while I'm looking for a wing-mirror for my old polo... I knew there was something I missed about not driving an old car on a daily basis... Trips to the scrapyard...

I got another locking fuel cap ages ago, I'm just being fussy now...:D

I've got a 2003 panda dynamic & that has a locking cap which works off the main key so it must have come with that from the factory! But strangely enough i have a friend who bought a brand new Eleganza & that hasn't got a locking cap!!
It seems most odd that some come with a locking cap & some without especially when the top of the range model does'nt have one, Unless its classed as an extra you have to order from new.

Yes the 2003 models all came with a locking fuel cap. But Fiat decided somewhere in their great wisdom  that they could save themselves the cost of an extra lock barrel by providing the poor sods buying their new car now with the stupid non-locking variety (Cheap skates (n))...

The laughable thing is...

When I went to pick up the locking fuel cap that I had ordered from Fiat (believing that the key would be the same shape), I discovered that there was a new Panda Accessories catalogue (which I helped myself to) and on the second last page under SECURITY was the code to buy a locking fuel cap:confused:.
So if Fiat said that your Panda was perfectly safe without a locking fuel cap, then why is it there under Security?

The mind boggles... :bang: :bang: :bang:

I did get one for mine from the dealer. About £14 but it does have a separate key which stays in the cap when unlocked so you end up having a bunch of keys hanging from the cap when refueling! These things are sent to try us...:bang:

I got one too...

I was expecting the key to be the same shape as the main ignition key. Unfortunately it wasn't... I was going to get the lock pins changed so that it matched the ignition key. As the lock is totally different, I can't do that :bang: :bang: :bang:

Still looking for a suitable donor lock... Don't want to spend £100 on a full lock set from Fiat... Anyone know where I could get a spare lock. Local scrappies didn't have anything suitable...

I bought a locking cap a few months ago part No 71802900-£18.35 inc VAT.
I wonder why two different numbers & prices?

This is the one I originally went in to buy, as a result of your previous post - but my dealer said that it was the wrong one, and the correct one - 71802520 wasn't actually listed in the parts catalogues.

Mine works fine - and of course saved me 4 quid!

However, both caps are listed as the correct part (along with a shed load of others parts/accessories) here: http://www.fiat.fr/cgi-bin/pbrand.dll/FIAT_FRANCE/showroom/showroomModel.jsp?categoryOID=-1073768058

Weirder and weirder!

Best wishes,
Creamola.

The problem with having a locking fuel cap with the same key as the ignition, is that thieves can steal the fuel cap, then reverse-engineer a key to fit. Then they have a key to get in to your car. Nowadays with immobiliser they can't start it though. My mum had a car stolen in this way. :(

All up until some point in 2004.

Sisters '04' Active has a locking fuel cap with same key as ignition (y)
