Not pleased at all. I was driving along the road when all of a sudden, I hear a big popping sound. Next thing I knew, I was getting covered with black glass. It seems like either

1) A stone hit it and made the sunroof exploded (BTW, it was in the open position)

or

2) It just exploded

So now I have to wait to get it repaired. Am not pleased. (n) :bang:

A little, it was more WTF!!! than shock. It was a bit suspect that a lorry/van went past so you never know.. I'm just more peeved that

1) This car was going to be well taken care of..So far it was being cleaned religiously with Magiuers cleaning products (wax, the works).

2) It was tidy as hell

All my other old cars have never had this happen before..

Such is my luck..

It was a multi pane skydome, but just the front portion got damaged. Paint got a little bit scratched where the glass was moving along and flying off.

insurance company should cover it, under windscreen/glass replacement. I know the entire roof (its glass) of my mates smart is covered.

Must've been a fault in the glass, i've only ever seen this happen on smarts before - and i think merc forked out for the repairs.

Highly unlikely that a fault in the glass would cause this to happen. Glass normally fails due to stress, the glass in the roof has no stress in it as such and will have been heated up and cooled many times. Much more likely is something was hit at speed. Your insurance company will probably be able to tell what caused it if they inspect it.

This has been common in the past with smart owners having the glass roofs 'explode' (ours is plastic thankfully). Most common reason seems to be that a stone-chip or conker dropping from a tree hits the glass and weakens it; then due to excesse pressure (either by going over bumps, driving fast on a twisty road or direct sunlight heating the glass up) it explodes and shatters. smart have now put a laminated section at the front of the screen which seems to sort this out (so therefore the stone-chip option looks most likely).

You can claim on your insurance without it affecting your NCD if you are fully comp ;)

Must admit I wondered if this would ever happen, as that is a large piece of glass to be tilted up at the angle they go. It must be under stress and I guess it could just be that; like the Smarts roofs? Look at the Stilos skydome, lots of small panes as opposed to Pandas... I would have thought if you had a good dealer they would just warranty claim it for you.
