Hi all well my little girl while coming back home through the Peak District had its service light come on. I am new to the area, and other than Platts in Stoke is there anywhere else I could take her?

Yes, BS Marson and sons Ltd on Keele road , Newcastle under Lyme.

In my opinion better service than Platts and much closer to Crewe.

If you head to Newcastle under Lyme from Crewe via Weston, Betley and Keele you will come across them on that road, (y)

Cheers will give them a shot.

I'm not sure what she needs, 27k on a 57, I think it's below average mileage

had a chat with Ollie in service all seems good 179 for a silver level service on a 100hp....

They list a lot of things they check see the website for servicing of cars over three years old..... What they change isn't that much really, but good to know they are there.
Trying an indi as a comparison will let you know.

That is a TOTAL RIP OFF, sorry but... all you are getting is oil and filter and an air filter - and a set of plugs, not even guaranteed OEM parts- the rest anyone could do in about 10 minutes.:eek:
Fiat list in the handbook what needs doing. What about a full diagnostic check for logged non MIL errors etc ?.
a real STEALER. I suggest you look elsewhere,

A lot of parts and inspections are mileage or time based, cam belt for example - brake fluid change, clutch fluid change, proper visual brake inspecrion - drums off !!. as stated, full diagnostic and report. not pissy meaningless things to pad their list like 'top up washer fluid' (note - does not include antifreeze solution) so they are allowing you a bit of tap water in their 'silver' service... my god, that is incredible. Rip off INC. !!!

My sister had a new Fiat 500 and my niece had a new Punto Grande from Marstons, both are very happy with the service they received.

My wife bought her Panda in Leeds but then moved down here and its second service was done at Marstons, they found that there was premature play in the nearside bottom balljoint and replaced it under warranty without us having to ask them to do this.

I think that is good service but everyone is entitled to there own opinion. What I think is very poor is to rubbish a garage that you have never used.

And to rubbish them because they offered you a deal that was too good...really?

If you feel the cars are overpriced you are free to go elsewhere...

Do your Sister and Niece have enough knowledge to make an objective assesment of the level of service and quality of work ? - I doubt it.
What is 'premature wear' ? - apart from the stealer getting money out of fiat no doubt.
There is absolutely no question they are a total rip off, their own service schedule and prices prove it.
The gullibility and naivety of some sections of the great British public never ceases to amaze me.
It sounds like you and the people you use as reference would not know one end of a dipstick from another.
The stealers must be laughing all the way to the bank when they see you coming.
Un freeking believable.

Talking of which what should I expect to pay for my service? It is four years old and will have done just over 16,000 miles by the time it is booked in.

Obviously it will need an oil change, the plugs have already been changed, I think the book says it needs new coolant and my brakes will certainly need bleeding (never had this done yet) I am thinking around £150 is reasonable if they do a proper check of things.

Always used the main dealer in the past because my car was still under warranty and it just makes things easier, but now it is four years old there is really no need.

If you are going to an Indy, and have a reasonable idea what you want, make a list and ask them to quote you.
For instance, if you want oil and filter, get them to quote for time and parts, also you NEED to know what parts they are using, the spec and make, otherwise you may well get a chinese filter and chip pan oil ;).
It is worth investigating doing some things yourself. why not consider changing oil yourself, and filter, and air filter.
Gap some new plugs if needed and pop them in. buy a decent manual if you are unsure. Check the suspension etc where possible yourself, all lights and fluids and tyres etc can be checked at home - no need to pay someone a fortune to do that !.
But, things that get complex or more involved, like changing brake fluid and clutch fluid, get them to quote, get the spec for the fluid and make sure they use it !! - get them to pay for the fluid as you will almost always use far more than expected when flushing / changing and you only need one seized bleed nipple to cause a total nightmare.
Look in your handbook and work out the simple things you can do at home. Then rather than book a 'set service' instruct the garage to do just what you want them to with a full quote, in writing, in advance, stating type and make etc of parts/
Always ask for old parts back where practical.

There is no need to use a main dealer, but, you are advised to have a diagnostic done on the various ecus in the car - an Ebay tester will NOT do the job !!!!.

You always have to balance that - for anyone who has a good working knowledge, or is prepared to work at it, get a copy of MES and the range of connectors and an ELM 327 - but dont buy a cheap crap 327 !!
Preferably, if you are keeping the car, buy MES Multiplexed at about 200 quid, you will save that money in no time if you learn how to make the best use of it.

You could also consider assisting fellow members near you with diagnostics if you were competent with the unit, a small charge may not be unreasonable for time also helping recoup the expense of the unit.
Lots to think about. (y)

Edit - Just to make sure no misunderstanding, for the panda, the ELM 327 is purely an interface to OBD, on its own it is useless. the Diagnostics are the software you use to interface to the ELM327, then to the Fiat various ECUs. That software, the only one I can recommend, is MES (MultiEcuScan) - there is nothing else even close available. It is absolutely excellent and does an incredible amount. It is nearly as good as Fiat's own Examiner system. !

I started to use this forum as a way of getting help and helping others if I could, I most certainly didn't join to receive abuse and derision for simply giving my opinion based on my own and my families experiences with a dealership.

So thank you to anyone who's assisted me in the past and I hope I've managed to help one or two people along the way but after the abuse I've received tonight I will be taking no further part in this forum.

Thank you and Goodbye to all the decent members on here..(y)

Thank you all! the guy I'm getting to quote does fiat and alfas so we will see.
I really want a man to look after her and trust, which Is what I had with my TF.
While I am mechanically minded, I really don't have the time to do these jobs, though would like too.
Luckily mine is a very good girl and behaves at all times.

Apart from a half spin while going around the island in the centre of Crewe...
We will put it down to diesel and leave it there...........LOL!

Ok so an update, got a service done at an indie up the road in Sandbach, HRC, good service. £113 plus vat which I will not knock. They even sorted my only squeak in the car! Which was a rear caliper.... For nothing.
Will use again.
