Finally got round to uploading the sound of my engine, this was recorded after an 8 mile journey so the engine was hot.

To me it sounds a bit tappety but other Youtube clips the engine seems to sound the same so this sound normal for a FIRE engine?

Direct link here if the above doesn't work.

Engine has done 15,700 miles.

15,700 miles mostly all city stop start. It does need an oil change as that has not been done since April 2013.

Hi JD, it definitely sounds top end'ish to me (and possibly an induction leak when you move near the cam-belt end - that could also be belt noise,
HOWEVER !!! NOTE !! - the AGC on phone /camera mic's can make sounds louder than normal.
That sounds like a small diesel.
Is it not under warranty ?

Again, I must stress, the sound is so difficult to determine due to AGC. If it ACTUALLY sounds like that, I would be getting a 'chap' or 'chapess' to look at it.

It does sound worse at the cambelt/water pump end I would say it does sound like that but not quite as high frequency. Wouldn't an air leak light the MIL though?

I do need to get it looked at, just paranoid as I don't want to invite a garage to invent problems that might not exist. It is out of warranty now as it is coming up to four years old however I mentioned to the dealer two years ago I thought it sounded a bit loud at the top end and they just said they all sound like that etc.

I just found another on youtube, and it sounds similar, so I think it is the phone / camera mic, mine certainly doesn't sound like that with 120,000 Km on the clock.
Sweet as the proverbial so to say..
A small induction leak can well be compensated for by the ecu without flagging..
What we used to do, but I wouldnt recommend it these days, is to spray petrol on the suspect area from a fairy liquid bottle... if there was a leak, the mixture would richen as fuel was drawn in.. probably a bit non PC and the wrath of H&S would be down lol..
SO, I dont recommend that ... (I still use it though)
It possibly IS the camera emphasising the peaks etc.
The trouble is, when you get something in your head, it is hard to convince yourself it is fine... you could do with finding another and listening - is there a member near you that would help ?
Cap.
